2009 Season The Viking Shield Once again Herne Bay held the Viking Shield Regatta thanks to Darren Ingram and Ryan Hosking, who won the trophy last year for the tenth year in a row. The pair failed to hang on to the trophy, however, losing out to Andy Cooper and Ashley Epps. Congratulations to Andy and Ashley for winning the trophy on their fourth attempt. Our novice and junior rowers are showing lots of promise this season. Amanda, Phoebe, Will and April took first place in the J16 quad scull. Continuing last year’s good form Sam, Phoebe, Amanda and April took 3rd place in the Ladies Junior 4 event. In their debut Novice 4 event Ed, Mike, Henry and Saeed took third place. In the Men’s Junior 4 race Herne Bay was represented by a crew from Kings School, who came second despite most never having rowed in coastal boats. Novice sculler Trevor Iddenden came 3rd and Junior sculler Ben Smissen came first. In the ever-competitive Veteran event Herne Bay’s A crew of Trevor, Stuart, Jim and Mark came 2nd. Thanks to Jim for coming out of retirement at short notice to replace the injured Keith. And in the final event of the day, the Men’s Senior 4, our A crew of Ryan, Ashley, Andy and Ben scored an impressive home victory. Let’s hope this is just a taste of things to come. Good luck to all of those crews competing in regattas this season. Off the water, thanks to all of the volunteers from the club who help to run our regattas: to those who sell refreshments, flip burgers and run the bar, to the safety boat and umpires boat crew, and to jeff for putting the whole thing together. It would not be possible without your help. Worthing HBARC was greeted by flat waters at Worthing regatta, it was on these waters that they were to do very well on. The first race was J16 Quad won by April Towner, William Campbell, Amanda Waters and Phoebe Shilling coxed by George Holness. Next were the ladies junior pairs; Samantha Epps and Phoebe Shilling came an impressive 2nd. The junior ladies were up next and scored 3rd place with the usual crew of Phoebe Shilling, April Towner, Amanda Waters and Samantha Epps. The Veteran fours then raced and came 3rd and 6th; The A crew of John Cox, Mark Simmonds, Mark Davies and Stuart Web (coxed by Phoebe Shilling) achieved 3rd and the B crew of Harry Roberts, Dave Marman, Roy Iddenden and Nikki Towner came 6th (coxed by George Holness). The Junior Sculls was successful with Ben Smissen coming 1st, John Cox coming 5th and Trevor Iddenden coming 6th.Will Mihr and Jamie Ross-Cumming earned an impressive 1st place in the Junior Pairs. The Junior four crew of Jamie Ross-Cumming, Alex Farrant, Simon Mount and Will Mihr (coxed by Phoebe Shilling) qualified in the heat and came close 2nd in the final. The senior pair of Ahsley Epps and Andy Cooper came a well-earned 2nd place. The novice crew of Mike Banks, Ed Acteson, Alex Farrant and Will Campbell came a disappointing last. The senior fours presented good results; the senior A crew of Ryan Hosking, Ben Smissen, Ashley Epps and Andy Cooper came 1st, coxed by Samantha Epps. The Senior B crew of Lewis, Mark, Fred and Trevor, coxed by Phoebe Shilling came 5th. The senior ladies came 1st with Mandy Munro, Sue Cox, Liz Taylor and Nikki Towner coxed by George Holness. Next up was the Ladies Senior pair, Liz Taylor and Nikki Towner came 6th. Finally the senior sculls that Ryan Hosking came 3rd. To round off the day Samantha Epps was awarded Coxswain of the day!

The day started with the J16 Quad won by Phoebe Shilling, Amanda Waters, April Towner and Will Campbell coxed by Will Cox. The Veteran crew of John Cox, Mark Davies, Mark Simmons and Stuart Webb came 3rd coxed by Phoebe Shilling. The senior A crew of Mandy Munro, Sue Cox, Liz Mills and Nikki Towner came 4th whilst the B crew of Samantha Epps, April Towner, Amanda Waters and Phoebe Shilling came 3rd. The ladies senior pair wasn’t as successful as the four as the A crew of Liz Mills and Nikki Towner finished in 7th place and the B crew of Samantha Epps and Phoebe Shilling came 8th. Ryan Hosking and Darren Ingram rowed the men’s senior pair and achieved a respectable 2nd place. The senior sculls were also rowed by Ryan Hosking; earning the club a 3rd place. Coming in 4th place were the B crew of Lewis Iddenden, Mark Simmons, Stuart Webb and Trevor Iddenden; coxed by Phoebe Shilling. Herne Bay Herne Bay Regatta proved to be a fairy successful regatta with many firsts, seconds and thirds. The day started bright and early (at 8.45 the earliest regatta of the season) with flat waters and barely any wind. It was Will Campbell’s birthday on the same day so he was wished a Happy Birthday by the club by receiving a fully clothed cold shower by his older ‘friends’ around 7.30am. The first race of the day was the quad scull composing of April Towner, Amanda Waters, Phoebe Shilling and Samantha Epps coxed by Will Cox. They won this race starting the day off with high hopes. The next race up was the Veteran fours. The A Crew of Trevor Brown, Mark Simmons, John Cox and Stuart Webb coxed by Phoebe Shilling who finished 4th and they were followed by the B crew of Jim Campbell, Roy Iddenden, Dave Marman and Harry Roberts coxed by George Holness and also the C crew who consisted of Nikki Towner, Sue Cox, Liz Taylor and Andy coxed by James. Jamie Ross-Cumming and Will Mihr competed in Junior pairs and finished a close 2nd. Men’s novice fours was next with the A crew of Will Campbell, Mike Banks, Ed Acteson and Henry Weldon (who had only just been let out of hospital) coming fifth. The B crew of George, John, Layton and Robert coxed by Kelsey coming in last. The junior sculls event was won by Dan Ritchie, closely following was Ben Smissen who finishing 2nd. The senior pairs was rowed by Ashley Epps and Andy Cooper who scored a close second place, just after Bexhill. James Campbell and Guy Campbell also completed this race in memory of their father who passed away earlier this year. The ladies senior fours then commenced with the A crew of Nikki Towner, Liz Mills, Sue Cox and Mandy Monroe coming 3rd and the B crew of Phoebe Shilling, Amanda Waters, April Towner and Samantha Epps coming 6th. Next up were the Novice sculls; This was rowed by Luke Towner and Trevor Iddenden. Less then half way up the course Trevor decided to turn back, however Luke went on to score a fourth place. The senior A crew of Andy Cooper, Ashley Epps, Ben Smissen and Ryan Hosking came first with superior coxing from Samantha Epps. The B crew compromising of Darren Ingram, Dan Ritchie, Mark Simmons and Guy Addington came 2nd. The C crew of Trevor Iddenden, Stuart Webb, Jamie Ross-Cumming and Lewis Iddenden coxed by Phoebe Shilling came 4th. The ladies senior pair was then rowed by Samantha Epps and Phoebe Shilling who came a reasonable 4th who beat the A crew in their own league who came 5th composing of Nikki Towner and Liz Mills. We had 2 crews in the Junior four event the A crew consisted of Jamie Ross-Cumming, Alex Farrant, Simon Mount and will Mihr coxed by Phoebe Shilling. They scored a 2nd place even though being rammed on the turns (check the pictures). The B crew came 5th rowed by Will Campbell, Luke Towner, Ed Acteson and Mike Banks. Luke Towner then replaced Simon Mount in the Junior Senior race where they went on to come 3rd. The junior ladies then came 3rd in their race, this crew consisted of Phoebe Shilling, Amanda Waters, April Towner and Samantha Epps coxed by George Holness.
Folkestone On Sunday 6th July was Folkestone regatta, where the sea started off calm but then became rough and choppy. The first races of the day were Junior heats, both crews which consisted of A: Jamie Ross-Cumming, Will Mihr, Alex Farrant and Luke Towner coxed by Phoebe Shilling and B: Will Campbell, Ian Baker, Ed Acteson and Nick Cox coxed by George Holness qualified for the final. The Junior four final was an interesting race; the sea had become quite rough, therefore the race started after 10 minutes of lining up on the line. The A crew were leading the race by 4 lengths until the last 300m when a very large wave swallowed the boat within its trough and span the boat right round causing Luke to come off his seat. The A crew were unable to hang on to their lead and came 2nd by half a canvas. The B crew however (in 2nd to last place) gradually filled up with water during the race and sunk whilst crossing the line. The men’s novice fours race consisted of 2 crews; The A crew consisted of Will Campbell, Ed Acteson, Alex Farrant and Mark coxed by Samantha came 5th whereas the B crew of Charlie, Layton, George and John coxed by Kelsey came last. The junior ladies A crew of Samantha Epps, April Towner, Amanda Waters and Phoebe Shilling came 3rd and went on to coming 5th in Senior ladies. The senior ladies crew of Mandy Monroe, Sue Cox, Liz Taylor and Nikki Towner came 3rd. In the veterans race the A crew of John Cox, Mark Davies, Stuart Webb and Trevor Brown coxed by Samantha came 4th with the B crew following 3 lengths behind of Harry Roberts, Dave Marman, Roy Iddenden and.......... coxed by Phoebe. The last race of the day (and by this time the sea had become very rough) was the men’s Senior Fours. The A crew of Ryan Hosking, Ben Smissen, Ashley Epps and Andy Cooper coxed by Samantha Epps continued being undefeated by coming 1st. The B crew of Lewis Iddenden, Trevor Iddenden, Stuart Webb and Darren Ingram coxed by Phoebe Shilling had an incident whilst launching where the rudder was critically damaged, and then during the race tore off, however they still managed to earn a 4th place. In Junior pairs, Jamie and Will finished a close 2nd, in Senior pairs Ashley Epps and Andy Cooper finished a respectable second after having crashes throughout the race. In Novice sculls John Cox finished his best result yet by coming 2nd, in Junior Sculls Ben Smissen came 2nd and in Senior Sculls Ryan Hosking failed to finish the race as he decided to go for a swim. After 4 regattas we are currently in 3rd place for the grand aggregate where we are 8 points behind 1st. Southsea Herne Bay attended Southsea regatta on 11th July, which lasted just under 12 hours! The sea was rough; it was very windy and raining! Yet Herne Bay ignored it all and performed at it’s best, this effort resulted in the club being awarded the Grand aggregate and also the Portsmouth Grand (A very sought after trophy!) The best result of the day was from the Senior Four A crew for winning and returning the Portsmouth (Pompey) grand back to its rightful club! The crew consisted of Ryan Hoskings (set a new record for most amounts of ‘Pompey’ wins in the club - 3), Ben Smissen, Ashley Epps (set a new record for youngest oarsmen to win it down the club) and Andy Cooper coxed by Samantha Epps (set a new record for the 1st coxswain to win it 2 times). During their heat they started sinking, however they still finished 1st even though by the time they crossed the line they were completely under. By the time of the final the sea had calmed right down, and the crew finished 1st by 3 lengths! The Senior B crew consisted of Lewis Iddenden, Trevor Iddenden, Stuart Webb and Jon Sliney coxed by Phoebe Shilling, they finished 3rd in their heat and then went on to finishing 7th in the final. Herne Bay also finished 1st in the Veterans 50+ category, the crew consisted of Harry Roberts, Trevor Brown, Graham Dawes and Roy Iddenden coxed by Lydia who went on the win coxswain of the day! The Junior ladies crew which consisted of Samantha Epps, April Towner, Amanda Waters and Phoebe Shilling coxed by George Holness finished 2nd! The same crew went on to come 7th in the senior ladies event! The Junior crew which consisted off Jamie Ross-Cummings, Will Mihr, Alex Farrant and Luke Towner coxed by Phoebe Shilling unfortunately got disqualified after a crash at the turn. However they went on the finish 2nd in the Junior senior event but 1st out of C.A.R.A, where they had to re-row the race 3 times, due to collisions from other clubs! Unfortunately both Men’s Novice crews did not qualify for the final, however the A crew of Ed Acteson, Mike Banks, William Campbell and Alex Farrant coxed by Samantha Epps did encounter their first experience of sinking and therefore could not finish the race! The B crew consisted of George, Leyton, Robert and John coxed by Kelsey. In small boat events Ben Smissen finished 1st in his Junior scull heat however he did not compete in the final as it was to close to the Senior 4's event. In junior pairs Jamie and Will came 3rd.
Dover Saturday 1st of August was eagerly anticipated as many of the previous regattas had been cancelled due to bad weather; The likely hood of Dover being cancelled because of this was minimal as Dover regatta takes place within the shelter of the harbor. Samantha Epps, April Towner, Amanda Waters and Phoebe Shilling coxed by George finished 1st in the J18 quad. The same crew, however coxed by Darren Ingram finished 4th in junior ladies. Samantha and Phoebe then went on to finish 5th in senior ladies pair. The Junior A mens crew consisting of Will Mihr, Luke Towner, Alex Farrant and Jamie Ross Cummings coxed by Phoebe Shilling coasted to finish in 2nd. The Junior B crew of Nick Cox, Charlie Simpson, Ian Baker and Will Campbell coxed by Lydia finished last. Alex and Jamie then went on to finish a comfortable 2nd in the mens Junior pairs. The Senior mens crew of Ryan Hoskings, Ben Smissen, Ashleys Epps and Darren Ingram coxed by Samantha narrowly missed out on first place by ¼ of a canvas after a very tight race with Deal. The Veterans crew of Harry Roberts, Dave Marmen, Roy Iddenden and Trever Brown coxed by Lydia finished 4th. The Novice crew of George, Charlie, Robert and John coxed by Kelsey finished 5th, which is the crews best result this season. Finally, Ben Smissen finished 1st in Junior Sculls with John Cox following in 5th place. Deal The first races of the day was the senior mens heat, where the senior a crew of, Ryan Hoskings, Ben Smissen, Ashley Epps, Andy Cooper coxed by Samantha Epps qualified for the final, however for the final they were drawn on the outside waters, and main rivals deal were drawn on the inside waters. In the final Herne Bay crashed at the 2nd turn with Deal B causing both crews to be disqualified for being off station. Ben Smissen however went on to come 1st in the scull. The Junior crew of Will Mihr, Luke Towner, Alex Farrent, Jamie Ross-Cummings coxed by Phoebe Shilling finished 2nd in both the Junior Race and Junior Senior race There were 2 crews in the veteran race, the A crew consisted of John Cox, Nikki Towner, Staurt Webb and Mark Davies coxed by Samantha Epps finished 4th, and the B crew of Harry Roberts, Dave Marmen, Roy Iddenden and Trever Brown coxed by Lydia finished 6th. The junior ladies of Samantha Epps, April Towner, Amanda Waters and Phoebe Shilling coxed by George performed well and came a close 2nd. They went on to race senior ladies where they finished 5th. Samantha and Phoebe then finished 5th in senior ladies pair. The Novice mens crew of George, Rob, Charlie and John coxed by Kelsey finished 6th. Dover/J16 Every rower from Herne Bay who rowed at this regatta went home with a medal due to their performances on the water, which showed a bright future for the club. The first race was the senior ladies quad, the A crew of Phoebe Shilling, Amanda Waters, Samantha Epps and April Towner finished 1st, followed by the B crew of Lydia Potterton, Megan Rolph, Danielle Greeves and Lisa North. The A crew then went on to win Ladies J16 quad and the B crew went on to win Ladies J14 quad. The mens J14 quad of George, Rob, Charlie and Lucas finished 2nd. In senior ladies sculls, Lauren finished 5th and April finished 7th after a crash at the start line. However in Ladies J16 sculls, April finished 1st and Lauren finished 5th. In senior ladies and J16 double sculls Amanda and April finished 1st and Samantha and Phoebe finished 2nd. However in J16 mixed double sculls April and Amanda finished 1st, followed by Samantha and Phoebe in 2nd, followed by Charlie and a Kings school rower in 3rd, followed by George and Rob in 4th!!! In J14 double sculls Herne Bay once again finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Shoreham Congratulations to the Senior Mens A crew of Ryan Hoskings, Ben Smissen, Ashley Epps, Andy Cooper coxed by Samantha Epps for winning the C.A.R.A Championships. In the race they were leading from the start, and finished with a 3 length lead. The Junior mens crew of Will Mihr, Luke Towner, Alex Farrent and Jamie ross Cummings coxed by Phoebe Shilling once again finished 2nd in both Junior and Junior Senior. Jamie and Alex then went on to finish 2nd in the Junior pair. The quad which consists of Phoebe Shilling, Amanda Waters, Samantha Epps and April Towner still remain undefeated by finishing 1st after having to complete a 2k course! (normally 500m). The novice boys crew of George, Rob, Charlie and John coxed by Kelsey finished 5th. The Junior ladies consisting of Samantha Epps, April Towner, Amanada Waters and Phoebe Shilling finished 2nd and then went on to finish 5th in Senior ladies. In Junior scull Ben finished 2nd, and Ashley finished 6th. In Novice sculls Luke Towner finished 3rd and Harry Roberts finished 6th. 2008 Season The Viking Shield On Saturday May 3rd, HBARC hosted the Viking Shield Regatta. This regatta is supplementary to the usual regatta programme and is held primarily to contest the men’s senior pairs race, with the Viking Shield being awarded to the first Kent pair to cross the line. This year Darren Ingram and Ryan Hosking were aiming to make it win number ten. Ingram and Hosking were victorious, with other Herne Bay hopefuls Andy Cooper and Ashley Epps hot on their heels and rivals Bexhill some 8 lengths off the pace. Ryan Hosking said ‘We are really pleased to grab that tenth win. It’s what we’ve been aiming for.’ HBARC President Garry Cooper said that the club was very proud of the pair’s achievements. As well as contesting the Viking Shield, the regatta is a chance for other crews to assess what the competition will be like for the season ahead. In that respect things bode well for HBARC. First off were youngsters Nick Cox, Will Campbell, Amanda Waters and April Towner in the under 16s quad scull, with a respectable third place. The ladies novice four saw the first Herne Bay win of the day, with victory for April Towner, Samantha Epps, Amanda Waters and Phoebe Shilling, coxed by George Holness. And with Helen Beach substituted for Phoebe Shilling the crew also won the ladies junior four event. Jamie Ross-Cumming and Will Mihr came second in men’s junior pairs, and also achieved a third place in the fours event, joined by Simon Mount and Alex Farrant. The step up from men’s junior to senior sculls is a significant one, so Andy Cooper did very well to take third place in this event. HBARC had more success to celebrate when the crew of Harry Roberts, Luke Towner, Mark Davies and Trevor Brown, coxed by Sam Epps, won the Junior/senior fours event, with a Herne Bay crew also taking third place (Will Mihr, Simon Mount, Alex Farrant and Jamie Ross-Cumming). Herne Bay had two crews in the very competitive Veterans section. Last year’s championship runners up Harry Roberts, Mark Davies, Stuart Webb and Trevor Brown came second to Folkestone, coxed by phoebe shilling. Fresh out of retirement, Liz Taylor and Nicky Towner took second place in ladies pairs and were joined by Amanda Monroe and Sue Cox for a third place in the ladies senior fours event. Mother/daughter duo Nicky and April Towner also came third in ladies double sculls. Ingram and Hosking rounded out a very successful day by winning the men’s senior fours event with crewmates Ashley Epps and Mark Simmonds, coxed by Samantha Epps. So the season looks very promising for Herne Bay. All crews are training hard to make sure that they build on this positive start. The next regatta is in Shoreham on Sunday 25th May. Thanks to Mark Davies for this report. Brighton and Hove Following on from the good results of the Viking Shield Regatta at Herne Bay and then the cancella tion of Shoreham 2 weeks ago, the season proper finally kicked off at Hove. After leaving Herne Bayshrouded in cloud and drizzle it was encouraging to arrive on a South Coast bathed in sunshine. To start with, a northerly wind meant a flat sea, but by the end of the day’s racing this had swung round to the south making for more challenging conditions for the later events. Men’s Senior Pairs saw the closest race of the day, with Andy Cooper and Ashley Epps missing out by a quarter of a canvas (official verdict) to Bexhill. Ryan Hosking and Mark Symonds came fourth. Both pairs combined and, coxed by Sam Epps, competed in the eventful Men’s Senior Fours race, however the outcome was disappointing for Herne Bay. Firstly the hastily assem bled B crew (John Cox, Paul Monroe, Stuart Webb and Mark Davies, coxed by George Holness) managed to collide with both our A crew and Folkestone within the first 20 strokes – this was at the end of the day and the sea was fairly bouncy by then. The A crew recovered and were looking good until they were taken out by Bexhill and lost their rudder on the turn, leading to the race being red flagged. At the restart the starter opted to avoid start line collisions by starting the race while the outside crews (including both Herne Baycrews) were still four lengths short of the start line, unable to hear anything the starter said due to a coastguard helicopter practising nearby. Again Herne Bay A were involved in a collision at the turns but the race went on as they had not yet fully regained the four length deficit from the start. The B crew avoided collisions but suffered compromised flotation issues at the turn due to a faulty bailer and had to head for the shore to empty the boat Luckily George had practiced his swimming in similar circumstances during training the previous week. Despite this we managed to accumulate enough senior points to take second place in the Senior aggregate. The Ladies Senior Four (Liz Taylor, Nicky Towner, Amanda Monroe and Sue Cox) came third – the same position as their last race in the Viking Shield Regatta but they were closer to the two crews ahead than the following pack and may get closer still as the season progresses. Congratulations to the Ladies Novice crew for their second place in the Novice race. They went on to take fourth in the Junior race. In Junior Senior Fours there were only three en tries, two of them from Herne Bay, but disappoint ingly victory went to Dover. Congrats however to the Herne Bay B crew (comprising our Junior ‘A’ crew Jamie Ross-Cumming, Simon Mount, Alex Farrant and Will Mihr) for beating Herne Bay A (aka the veteran crew with Trevor Brown, Mark Davies, Bob Shilling and Harry Roberts) with a combined age double their own. The Junior crew came third in their Junior Fours race, while the vets (last year’s CARA runners up – Harry, Mark, Stuart and Trevor, coxed by Sam) came fourth in their own event. Jamie Ross-Cumming and Will Mihr made a strong start in Junior Pairs (despite going for a swim just before the start line). They were leading up to the turns but fell back a few places by the line to finish third.
Thanks to Helen Kelly for this report.
Southsea After five regattas cancelled due to bad weather Herne Bay ARC rowers were raring to go on Saturday 12th July at Southsea regatta, the biggest regatta of the coastal rowing calendar, where clubs from Kentand Sussex (the Coast Amateur Rowing Association) compete against clubs from the Hants and Dorsetassociation (HDARA). The best result of the day came in the Ladies Novice Fours event, won by HBARC girls Phoebe Shilling, Amanda Waters, April Towner and Samantha Epps (coxed by George Holness). The girls had a good start but were behind at the turns. Coming back from the turns, rowing against the wind, the girls pulled through to finish over a length ahead of Poole ARC. The same crew then went on to finish third in the Ladies Junior event, though they were the first CARA crew to cross the line, therefore scoring a win for HBARC in the CARA grand aggregate points. Samantha Epps and Phoebe Shilling done really well by coming third in the ladies junior pair but first out the of CARA crews. As holders of the coveted Pompey Grand trophy, HBARC Men’s Senior Four crew were out to retain the title. The crew of Bradley Whale, Ashley Epps, Mark Simmonds and Ryan Hosking, coxed by Samantha Epps, won the heat but were drawn in the outside lane for the final and could only manage fourth place. The race was won by reigning South Coast Champions Ryde RC. In the Men’s Junior-Senior Fours event, the crew of Trevor Brown, Mark Davies, Bradley Whale and Harry Roberts, coxed by George Holness, was the first CARA crew to cross the line, winning valuable points for the club. Brown and Roberts, joined by Graham Dawes and Bob Balchin from Bexhill RC, came second in the Veterans over 50s event. Thanks To Helen Kelly for this report Folkestone During the week the senior squad had been seat racing to determine who made the 'A' crew - This seemed to motivate everyone in the last race of the day - Senior Fours - with the Herne Bay A crew of Dan Richie, Ashley Epps, Mark Simmonds and Ryan Hosking finishing 1st ahead of Bexhill and Herne Bay B (Darren Ingram, Andy Cooper, Lewis and Trevor Iddenden) who were too close to call (but the umpires gave 2nd place to Bexhill). In the senior pairs earlier in the day the result was a dead heat between 2 Herne Bay Crews who were a long way ahead of the other crews. Ryan and Darren decided not to re-row so 1st place was awarded to Ashley and Andy. Andy Cooper also came 2nd in Senior Sculls. It was a busy day for the girls as well. In the Novice 4s race April Towner, Amanda Waters, Sam Epps and Phoebe Shilling came a close 2nd. They also raced in Junior 4s and J16 quads where they came 3rd after breaking a gate on one of the riggers. The senior win means that Mark Simmonds can not row veteran again this season - earlier in the day he finished 3rd in Vet 4s together with Harry, Mark D and Trevor Brown. That same trio with Jamie Ross Cumming came 2nd in the Junior Senior 4s, 1 place better than Jamie achieved in the Junior 4s with Luke Towner, Alex Farrant and Simon Mount. Jamie and Luke also came 3rd in Junior pairs - not bad after a wobbly start and considering Luke only switched sides a couple of weeks ago. Deal After enjoying some success at Eastbourne and Shoreham regattas last year, a group of rowers from Ruderverein Waltrop joined us for Deal regatta. Fortunately the regatta was on, although the conditions were challenging to say the least, with difficult launching and some large waves to contend with. In the first event of the day, the first heat of the Men’s Senior Fours, one of the Waltrop crews sank when the bow canvas on their boat failed, but their countrymen won the heat, thus qualifying for the final. In the second heat the two regular HBARC crews both qualified. Bjorn, Lars, Totti, and Martin were disappointed to have missed out on qualifying but enjoyed their swim! HBARC saw two more of its boats sink in the Men’s Junior Pairs race, but after both were recovered safely (Alex and Simon on the back of a fishing trawler was quite a sight!) things started to look up for HBARC when Phoebe Shilling, Amanda Waters, April Towner and Samantha Epps won the Ladies Novice event, winning their novice medals and promotion to Junior Status. The girls have been coached in recent weeks by Darren Ingram and the crew owe much to his expertise. After a good start the crew stretched out a convincing lead and finished a good 400 metres in front of the second place crew. William Campbell, Alex Farrant, Simon Mount and Nick Cox came third in the Men’s Noivce Fours event, and Alex and Simon were joined by Luke Towner and Michael Epps to come third in the Junior event as well. A crew made up of HBARC and Waltrop rowers (Sebastian Joraslafsky, Jonas Groner, Lars Wagner and Ian Baker) came fourth in the Junior event. HBARC had three crews in the Men’s Senior Fours final. The ‘A’ crew of Darren Ingram, Ashley Epps, Mark Simmonds and Ryan Hosking, coxed by Samantha Epps, were looking for another win and more points towards the Senior Fours championship, but after a very close race they were beaten by a HBARC crew made up of Waltrop rowers (Sebastian Husemann, Benedict Dahmen, Robert Keuper and Uli Schmolders, coxed by George Holness). This is a great achievement for the Germans, to row on rough seas in unfamiliar boats and completing two buoy turns. Two of the crew have represented Germany – Robert Keuper recently in the Under 18s World Championships and Sebastian Huesman some years ago – and their technique and strength shone through. Herne Bay’s own ‘B’ crew came fourth, which, added to the first and second place, gained the club valuable points in the CARA league. Ashley Epps and Andrew Cooper continued a recent run of form to come second in Men’s Senior Pairs, and Andrew Cooper also came third in the Senior Sculls event. In the Ladies Senior Fours event, Sue Cox, Liz Taylor, Nicky Towner and Amanda Monroe were very pleased to finish second after recently considering quitting. Hopefully this will spur them on for the rest of the season. After sinking whilst launching, the Waltrop ladies crew of Svenya Joralafsky, Jana Zimmernan, Lisa Schulte-Kump and Vera Finkenbusch finished fourth in the Junior event and fifth in the senior event. Four of the five crews in the Men’s Junior-Senior Fours event were HBARC, so they had a good chance of scoring some points in the league. The usual ‘A’ crew of Trevor Brown, Mark Davies and Harry Roberts were joined by Sebastian Joraslafsky and won convincingly over the ‘B’ crew of Luke Towner, Alex Farrant, Simon Mount and Michael Epps. Crews made up of Waltrop and HABRC rowers also came third and fifth: Thorsten Prang, Ian Baker, Martin Goer and Paul Kelly came third and William Campbell, Leyton Potterton, Nick Cox and Lars Wagner came fifth. It was a very busy day for Captain Harry Roberts with forty-five rowers, three sinkings and three damaged boats, but it was all worth it for the points won and for the friendships forged between HBARC and Ruderverein Waltrop. Dover The Men’s Senior Four crew of Dan Richie, Ashley Epps, Mark Simmonds and Ryan Hosking, coxed by Samantha Epps, won their event easily over rivals Bexhill. The crew are now leading the Men’s Senior Four championship 3 wins to 1 and are on course to compete in the Bideford Bowl race at the South Coast Championships, due to be held in Plymouth on September 13th. Ashley Epps then went on to win the Men’s Senior Pairs event with crewmate Andy Cooper. Cooper also came third in the Senior Sculling event. The Men’s Junoir-Senior Four crew are also aiming to represent the Coast Amateur Rowing Association in Plymouth, taking their third win of the season at Dover. With two of the usual four absent, Trevor Brown and Harry Roberts rowed with Junior and Novice rowers Michael Epps and Michael Ormistone. Earlier in the day Michael Ormistone, along with Nick Cox, Simon Mount and Alex Farrant came second in the Men’s Novice Fours event. Since winning the Junior-Senior race, Ormistone can no longer row in the Novice status events. Carrying on their recent good form Phoebe Shilling, Amanda Waters, April Towner and Samantha Epps (coxed by George Holness) came second in the Ladies Junior Fours event. It was a very close race for second place between Herne Bay and Worthing, but the Bay girls just clinched it. In the Men’s Junior Fours event, Jamie Ross-Cumming, Luke Towner, Simon Mount and Alex Farrant came third. HBARC is currently second in the CARA league, 70 points behind leaders Bexhill. With three regattas left this season they have a lot of work to do to make up that deficit, but if they carry on this run of good results they can achieve that goal. Captain Harry Roberts would be very pleased to be able to win the CARA league before he gives up the captaincy at the end of this year. Eastbourne Eastbourne was another successful regatta with Dan Richie, Ashley Epps, Mark Simmons and Ryan Hosking coxed by Samantha Epps winning the Men’s Senior Four. A disappointing call from the Umpire with Ashley Epps and Andrew Cooper being disqualified from the Men’s Senior Pair meaning that Bexhill’s pair won the Championship. Not forgetting Darren Ingram and Ryan Hosking coming in second place and Mark Simmons and Dan Richie coming in third. Phoebe Shilling, Amanda Waters, April Towner and Samantha Epps (coxed by George Holness) came a comfortable second place in the Ladies Junior Fours event and also took second place in the Ladies Senior Fours. Trevor Brown, Mark Davies, Jamie Ross-Cumming and Harry Roberts, coxed by George Holness secured their place in the Junior Senior Championships after coming first. The Junior crew of Jamie Ross-Cumming, Nick Cox, Luke Towner, William Mihr coxed by George Holness came a close third against Deal. In the Veteran event Trevor Brown, Stuart Webb, Mark Davies and Harry Roberts took second place. Dan Richie won his first Junior Sculls race at Eastbourne, and also went on to come second in the Senior Sculls event. Captain Harry Roberts was honoured to collect the Senior and Grand Aggregate Trophy. After the final regatta HBARC came second in the CARA League and Grand Aggregate table Hastings Hastings Regatta was a very victorious regatta for HBARC, although the men’s novice scull was disappointing with William Campbell falling out at the turns and thus delaying the next race. The Men’s Senior four was won by Dan Richie, Ashley Epps, Andrew Cooper, and Ryan Hosking coxed by Samantha Epps. Ashley Epps and Andy Cooper came second in the Senior Pair with just a canvas between them and Bexhill. The Junior/Senior Fours was won by Trevor Brown, Mark Davies, Michael Ormiston and Harry Roberts, coxed by George Holness. In the Men’s Junior Fours event Jamie Ross-Cumming, Nick Cox, Luke Towner and William Mihr took first place moving Nick Cox up from Novice to his first junior win. As the weather worsened Phoebe Shilling, Amanda Waters, April Towner and Samantha Epps (coxed by George Holness) came second in the Ladies Junior Fours event, also taking second place in the Ladies Senior Fours closely followed by the senior ladies in third place. In the Veteran event at Hastings Trevor Brown, Stuart Webb, Mark Davies and John Cox came second. Captain Harry Roberts was honoured to collect the Senior and Grand Aggregate trophy making Hastings a very successful regatta. Herne Bay Herne Bay regatta was another successful day for HBARC with the first race a victory in the Quad sculls. April Towner, Nick Cox, Will Campbell and Amanda Waters won first place with Samantha Epps Coxing. The victory suffered a broken blade from Will Campbell after 100 metres but still managed to win.The next race was the Novice fours final; HBARC came third. The preceding race for Herne Bay was the Veteran fours: The crew of Trevor Brown, Stuart Webb, Mark Davies and John Cox came a respectable third place. The Junior Pairs was next with Will Mihr and Jamie Ross-Cumming coming a close third with Deal. The Junior Sculls earned HBARC a fourth place thanks to John Cox.The Men's Senior Pairs was a promising race with the usual suspects of Darren Ingram and Ryan Hosking coming first followed by Andy Cooper and Ashley Epps. The Senior Ladies crew of Sue Cox, Liz Taylor, Nicky Towner and Amanda Monroe scored an impressive victory at their home regatta in a very close race. They came second overall in the Ladies Senior Fours Championship but declined to race at Plymouth because of other commitments. More success follows with the Men's Senior four with the A crew of Dan Richie, Ashley Epps, Mark Simmons and Ryan Hosking, coxed by Samantha Epps coming first and in second place was the senior ‘B’ crew of Darren Ingram, Lewis Iddenden, Trevor Iddenden and Andrew Cooper. Phoebe Shilling and Samantha Epps who came an impressive third place rowed the ladies Senior Pairs final. The Junior crew of Jamie Ross-Cumming, Nick Cox, Luke Towner, William Mihr coxed by George Holness came second in the Junior fours after a re-row was ordered as Deal (who were in the lead) got caught round a buoy. The men's Senior Sculls was rowed by Ryan Hosking and scored a second place. Captain Harry Roberts was honoured to collect the Senior and Grand Aggregate trophies at all three regattas. Plymouth Championships After a 6-hour drive early on Friday morning the HBARC rowers and supporters were glad to arrive at Plymouth Rowing Club only to be disappointed by the ground conditions. It had been raining heavily the night before and during the day resulting in the field turning to a muddy mess in most places. With all the boats rigged up and ready to go the majority of the rowers and supporters retreated back to the hotel until racing commenced for Herne Bay later that day. Tensions were high on Friday afternoon as the first of two J18 races approached. Both crews boarded water right after each other and rowed up to the start line. The boys J18 who consisted of William Campbell, Nick Cox, Luke Towner and Michael Epps coxed by Vanessa Ware came a respectable 2nd place after leading most of the way. The girls J18 immediately followed crewed by Phoebe Shilling, April Towner, Amanda Waters and Samantha Epps coxed by George Holness also achieving a well-earned 2nd place by half a boat length behind Exeter. With Both crews exhausted from their races, everyone travelled back to the hotel to relax and freshen up for the evening. For Championship day; the weather had improved vastly from the day before, which boosted morale and spirit. The first Championship race was the girl’s junior four, consisting of Phoebe Shilling, April Towner, Amanda Waters and Samantha Epps coxed by George Holness encountered tough competition and finally finishing a disappointing 6th place, their first experience of a championship race. The next race for HBARC was the Junior Senior Championship race. The two Junior Senior crews came 5th and 6th with the A crew consisting of Trevor Brown, Harry Roberts, Mark Davies and Jamie Ross-Cumming coxed by Nathan Belcher-Wilson closely followed by the B crew consisting of Luke Towner, Michael Epps, Michael Ormiston and Will Mihr. Soon after was the Senior Four Open that was rowed by Darren Ingram, Andy Cooper, Trevor and Lewis Iddenden coxed by Vanessa Ware came a respectable 2nd place. The final race for HBARC of the day was the Bideford Bowl senior four race. The crew looked promising with Dan Richie, Mark Simmons, Ashley Epps and Ryan Hoskins coxed by Samantha Epps but still achieved a creditable 3rd place – leaving Bexhill to win .
2007 Season Deal Rowers from Herne Bay Amateur Rowing Club took part in Deal Regatta, on a day with a flat sea and sunny sky. The club saw three more of its rowers promoted from Novice to Junior status when they won their second Novice race: Jamie Ross-Cummings, Luke Towner and Will Mihr (pictured below after their first win). John Mihr was also in the winning crew, which was coxed by George Holness. The Novice B crew of William Campbell, Nick Cox, Alex Farant and Simon Mount, coxed by Samantha Epps, came 3rd. Andy Cooper proved his sculling abilities once more at Deal by winning the Men’s Junior Sculls event. The Men’s Senior Four crew of Andy Cooper, Ashley Epps, Mark Simmonds and Ryan Hosking, coxed by Samantha Epps, came second to rivals Bexhill after a collision at the turn lead to a restart. The veteran crew of Trevor Brown, Mark Davies, Stuart Webb and Harry Roberts came third in a very competitive race, narrowly missing out on second place to Bexhill. Dover and Folkestone Dover and Folkestone Regattas took place on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th August. Once again HBARC took a strong squad of rowers and saw some good results. Andy Cooper came second in Men’s Junior Sculls on both days, and was joined by Stuart Webb in Men’s Senior Pairs at Dover and by Ashley Epps at Folkestone, coming third on both days. Darren Ingram and Ryan Hosking came second in Men’s Senior Pairs at both Regattas. Both days saw second places for the Men’s Senior Four crew of Darren Ingram (back from injury), Ashley Epps, Mark Simmonds and Ryan Hosking, coxed by Samantha Epps. The Veteran crew came second at Folkestone after a disappointing fifth place at Dover, when John Cox had to stand it at the last minute for absent Mark Davies. In the Junior/Senior Fours event, Jamie Ross-Cummings, Ian Baker, Matt Appleby and Will Mihr, three of whom are Junior rowers fresh from the Novice section gave an impressive performance to come third at Folkestone. On the Saturday Baker and Ross-Cummings were joined by Veterans Brown and Roberts and also came third. Eastbourne Another long journey to Eastbourne, one of the trickiest destinations to reach from Herne Bay, however many club members made a weekend of it by staying overnight for Shoreham Regatta the next day Proper coastal weather today with some challenging conditions that made launching (and landing) the boats tricky and a few instances of compromised flotation during racing Also this weekend our entries (and possible points) were boosted by our friends from Herne Bay's twin town Waltrop who have been in Herne Bay all week to practice for a weekend of coastal racing - rather different to the flat water they are used to. The problems caused by the conditions were demonstrated by today's senior 4 crew (Ryan Hosking, Mark Symons, Andy Cooper and Ashley Epps coxed by Sam Epps). They took the lead early on but near the turns three successive waves swamped the boat making it impossible to continue the race so they had to be towed ashore and carry the boat back along the beach. There were no complaints from the crew however - it's just an accepted feature of rowing on the sea. In the senior pairs Harry and Trevor had experienced a similar problem, their boat (borrowed from Dover) had a loose bow canvas and the bow section filled with water by the turn, leaving Harry up to his waist in water, so the safety boat had to take them ashore for the long walk back. It was not a good day for Herne Bay in the Senior Pairs, Mark Symons and Ashley didn't finish the race (they discovered on the start that stroke's foot stretcher wasn't secure), Stuart Webb and Mark Davies did finish following 4 Bexhill pairs across the line. Consolation for Harry and Trevor came in the Veteran 4 final where together with Mark D and Stuart and coxed by Sam they achieved the first veteran win this season. In view of the conditions we'd opted for a wooden boat (Jeff Hutton) rather than the plastic and this seemed to pay off as it seems to ride the waves better and ship less water so the automatic bailers could cope - this may be due to the in-line arrangement of the seats in the plastic boat leaving less room for the end sections (and their buoyancy compartments) and more weight in the bows (with the bow oarsman nearer the bows). The debate about the handling of plastic boats in rougher water looks set to continue as a discussion point for a while yet... In Junior 4s our Ruderverein Waltrop foursome of B Gehre, L Breukner, B Dahmen and S Huseman came a close 2nd further down the field Jamie Ross Cummins, Ian Baker Luke Towner and Will Mihr came 6th and William Campbell, Matti Kaiser, Nicholas Cox and Michael Epps came in behind them. In Novice 4s there was a second place for the same crew that came 6th in Junior 4 - can't be long before they get that 1st place - when they do it'll be Ian's second Novice win which means he'll no longer be a novice and have to row at Junior or higher. In Junior sculls Andy Cooper came 2nd and in Junior Pairs S Huseman and B Dahmen came 2nd and Ian and Jamie came 4th Senior sculls John Cox finished his first race for some years but Ryan didn't. Junior Senior 4s the Waltrop four finished 2nd and the Veteran 4 with Matti Kaiser instead of Stuart came 5th. 1 place behind were Paul Kelly, Ian, Jamie and Michael Epps. Shoreham The Regatta of the weekend found us among the cabbages on the beach at Shoreham and at 9.30 the conditions looked good, but by the time of the first race at 10.30 the wind had picked up and conditions were starting to resemble those at Eastbourne yesterday. However, despite some changes to the timetable and a half hour break in racing early on, conditions improved and although challenging, the conditions were "better" than yesterday and we got another full days racing. Our crews were pretty much the same as the day before with many having spent the night under canvas - would they be more refreshed by the shorter journey - or had they had much sleep at all? Today's Senior four had Dan Richie returning at stroke with Ashley Epps, Mark Symons, and Ryan Hosking coxed by Sam Epps - they finished the race but in 3rd place complaining bitterly about being boxed in by Bexhill on the run out to the turns while Deal (with a certain R.Twyman in the crew) took the lead and eventually the race. This result seemed harder to take than not finishing the day before after being swamped. One place behind the A crew were the B crew containing the omitted Andy Cooper at stroke with Stuart Webb, Mark Davies and Matt Appleby. They had their own battle for 4th place with the Folkestone veteran 4 containing Matt's dad. I think we beat them (have to check) which made up for finishing second to them again in the veteran Fours race (vet crew of Harry, Mark D, Stuart and Trevor) Ryan finished his first Senior sculls race of the season coming second, a similar placing to Andy cooper in the Junior sculls Earlier in the day in the Junior Senior Fours race the Waltrop Herne Bay crew stormed to an impressive victory, improving on the previous days second place - winning this race made them ineligible for the Junior race so they later rowed the senior fours race instead as the 3rd Herne Bay crew - their course took them so far out to sea that some observers on the beach thought they were rowing back to Germany. Also in the JS 4s race were Harry, Mark, Matti and Trevor coxed by George I didn't get the full details of today's novice and Junior crews but the good news is that Jamie Ross Cummins, Ian Baker, Luke Towner and Will Mihr got their win in the Novice Fours - This second win for Ian puts him out of the Novice crew but the other 3 can race again (unless they win Junior in the meantime). Harry and Trevor started the Senior Pairs race hoping not to end up in the water again, they did finish but some places behind Mark Symons and Ashley who came 3rd No coastal Regattas next weekend (but there is the Nat. Champs in Nottingham at which our senior four may or may not be competing in the coastal event - coastal boats on a lake, sounds like practice for this years South coast Champs). Southsea Herne Bay rowers and supporters made the long journey to Southsea for some different competition in the form of clubs from Hants and Dorset as well as our regular CARA opponents. With all the recent cancellations in Kent and Sussex would our crews have had enough race experience this season to flourish ? time would tell! Southsea Regatta (held at Lumps Fort, Eastney) and for a change at this, only our 3rd Regatta of the season, the sun came out and the wind had dropped to a westerley breeze so things looked promising for a full days racing. However, there was still no racing half an hour after the advertised 10.30am start so it promised to be a long day...... In fact the main race of the day took place about 8 hours later (most coastal Regattas finish in 5 hours because of the tide) but it was well worth the wait for Herne Bay's supporters. Following last years 2nd place for the Herne Bay 2nd crew and controversial disqualification of our 1st crew in the Senior 4 race, Herne Bay's 1st crew made no mistake - powering to a convincing victory in both their heat and the final. Congratulations to Ryan Hosking, Ashley Epps, Mark Symons and Dan Richie coxed by Sam Epps for regaining the Portsmouth Grand Challenge Trophy. Knocked out in the heats were our 2nd crew Andy Cooper,Trevor Iddenden, John Clay and Darren Ingram coxed by George Holness who only narrowly missed a place in the final and our 3rd crew who were the veteran 4 crew coxed by Will Campbell getting some race practice before their main event. There were no Herne Bay ladies crews today, it was apparently too far to travel (which doesn't bode well for Eastbourne next week which starts earlier and takes even longer to get to from Herne Bay) but plenty of entries in the other events including most of the Novices gaining more racing experience. Most unfortunate rower of the day was possibly vice captain Andy Cooper who despite winning twice at our home Regatta, was dropped from the senior 4 crew and went for a swim at the start of the Junior Sculls heat. To cap it all in the Senior Pairs race, together with Trevor Iddenden (who at least finished the Junior sculls heat but didn't make the final), he was beaten by 2 old men twice his age from the veteran crew - Mark Davies and Stuart Webb, a few places ahead of them were Mark Symons and Ashley Epps who came 5th The full Veteran 4 crew of Harry Roberts, Mark Davies, Stuart Webb and Trevor Brown coxed by George Holness came 4th I think, but it was hard to tell who was ahead from where I was sitting....just need some more practice or would that be fitness ??? Anyway, still on course to make the championships as only one CARA crew beat us - so still in 2nd place. In the Junior 4 heat for CARA crews Luke Towner, Pip Churchyard, Nicholas Cox and Will Mihr coxed by George Holness came 4th qualifying for the final, Will Campbell, Alex Farrant, Simon Mount and Michael Epps coxed by Sam were a couple of places behind so did not make the final. Herne Bay did not win the event but it's early days for these crews and the competition was quite tough today. In the Novice 4 event both Herne Bay crews qualified for the final Jamie Ross-Cumming, Ian Baker, Simon Mount and Alex Farrant coxed by Sam Epps and Luke Towner, Pip Churchyard, Nicholas Cox and Will Mihr coxed by George Holness. Despite not winning the event they should be pleased that they were the fastest CARA crews especially as some of them have only being rowing a number of weeks and some of the opposition seemed to be quite experienced. No sculling success today - I've already mentioned the Junior event, in the senior event Ryan did not finish (but then again the senior fours race was imminent) In the Novice sculls Will Campbell started the race but only got half way back from the turns after some problems with his seat In Junior Senior 4s the veteran crew with John Clay instead of Stuart came 4th and further down the large field came Jamie, Ian, Luke, and Michael Epps. In the final race of the day - the Junior pairs final Jamie and Ian showed more harmony than after the Novice 4s race when they entertained the onlookers with a frank exchange of views on the beach after the race but did not pick up any silverware. However, considering how lumpy the water was by now and their relative inexperience (Jamie has only been rowing a couple of months) they did well to complete the race (and not come last). Hastings After the recent weather and cancelled regattas it was good to arrive at Hastings to bright sunshine, no breeze and flat seas. Ideal conditions for sitting on the beach and also some hard racing. Disapointingly there were no HB womens crews today even though they've been training through the winter and seemed to be gearing up for a good season….still , this was only the first regatta and there’s a long way to go. In the 1st race of the day the Junior 4 coxed by captain Harry - Luke Towner, William Mihr, Ian Baker, Jamie Ross Cummings in their 1st competitive race came 5th – this was a good warm up for this new crew for their main event the Novice Fours was later in the day. In Senior pairs it was a straight final but with not enough boats Harry and Trevor had to scratch. We made good use of our 3 boats with 2nd place for Andy Cooper and Ashley Epps, 3rd place for Ryan Hosking and Dan Richie and 4th for Mark Davies and Stewart Webb. In Junior sculls Ashley Epps did not finish but Andy Cooper came 2nd after leading the race until the last 20 strokes. The Novice 4 (same crew as Junior 4) coxed by George Holness had a great result crossing the line 3rd but finishing 2nd after a clash on the turn led to another crew’s disqualification. Todays Senior 4, coxed by Sam Epps, was comprised of Andy Cooper, Ashley Epps, Dan Richie and Ryan Hosking. They won their race convincingly but may not race in that combination for a while with Dan heading off to the river for a while. If these results were making things seem easy for new captain Harry he was brought down to earth with two grillings from the umpires firstly for the offence of having a green number on a boat and secondly for wrong kit being worn by Ryan. The win in the Senior 4 left Harry with an additional problem, Dan’s first Senior win means he is now ineligible to row in the Junior Senior 4, to make up for missing that race Dan entered Novice sculls, his 1st coastal sculling race, having come 3rd in the fours head in a quad scull he was fairly confident of getting a result – however, that result was second place… The Veteran 4 of Harry Roberts, Mark Davies, Stuart Webb and Trevor Brown coxed by Sam powered off the start into an early lead but couldn’t hold on and finished in 2nd place. In Senior sculls Ryan Hosking also came 2nd. Finally the Junior Senior 4 coxed by George (the same crew as veteran 4 but with Ian instead of Stuart) managed a creditable 3rd place. Herne Bay The Regatta got underway on time and in good conditions. the overcast sky did not result in (much) rain and the brisk south westerly breeze did not chop the water up too much. Taking the results from a Herne Bay point of view [click here for full results] in the order they were raced the very first race - the Junior 16 quad fours saw our newest coastal boat, the Garry Cooper, rigged as a quadruple sculler for the first time in a race. The result was a close one resulting in a close 3rd place for the HB crew of Luke Towner, April Towner, Will Campbell and Nicholas Cox, coxed by George Holnes. This demonstrated the versatility of our latest coastal boat which can be rigged both as a quad sculler and a sweep oared four because of the seats being inline (traditionally they are offset). In the Ladies Pairs race Helen Bell and Natalie Ingram came 4th. In the Veteran 4 Harry Roberts, Mark Davies, Stuart Webb and Trevor Brown coxed by Sam Epps repeated their Hastings result and came 2nd behind Folkestone. In the Novice sculls final Matt Appleby (whose father had just beaten us rowing for Folkestone) came a close 3rd for Herne Bay. A good sign for the future is the number of Novice rowers currently training at Herne Bay. In the Ladies Novice 4 race April Towner, Kirstie Langley, Hannah Woods and Amanda Waters had a good 1st race and will surely improve in the races to come. There were 2 Herne Bay crews in the Mens' Novice 4 race. Jamie Ross-Cumming, Ian Baker, Simon Mount and Will Mihr coxed by George Holness came 3rd and the B crew Will Campbell, Luke Towner, Nicholas Cox and Alex Farant coxed by Natalie Ingram came 6th At the other end of the scale in the premier event the Senior 4s, Herne Bay maintained their 100% record in this event this season winning for the 2nd time, the crew were Andy Cooper, Ashley Epps, Mark Symons and Ryan Hosking coxed by Sam Epps . A few places behind the A crew were the B crew (comprised of same crew that came 2nd in the veteran four race). In the Junior pairs final Jamie Ross-Cumming and Ian Baker came 3rd, a great result in their first pairs race. In the ladies senior 4 it was good to see a Herne Bay crew after the no-show at Hastings, however things did not go perfectly for Helen Kelly, Emily Heath, Helen Bell and Natalie Ingram coxed by Sam Epps and they came 5th after one of their blades came out during the race. In the senior pairs final all 3 Herne Bay crews qualified for the final. Mark Symons and Ashley Epps did not finish after clashing with another crew soon after the start. The good news however was that Ryan Hosking and Darren Ingram (despite his recent back problems) came 2nd to Bexhill but as the 1st Kent crew to cross the line retained the Viking Shield. Mark Davies and Stuart Webb were a couple of places behind them. In Junior 4s Herne Bay crews came 4th and 5th, The crews were firstly Jamie Ross-Cumming, Ian Baker, Simon Mount, Alex Farant coxed by Sam Epps and secondly Tim Carnell-McKean, Philip Churchyard, Nick Cox Will Mihr coxed by George Holness. In Junior Senior 4s we came 4th and 5th Harry Roberts, Mark Davies, Paul Kelly and Trevor Brown coxed by George Holness, followed by Jamie Ross-Cumming, Ian Baker, Luke Towner and Mike Epps coxed by Sam Epps. In the final race of the day, Junior sculls, Andy Cooper won and Trevor Iddenden was 5th. Dorney Lake Championships The 51st South Coast Champs was held (controversially for some) on the flat water of Dorney Lake but in Coastal Boats. At least there was less risk of the event being cancelled due to the weather but the debate will continue as to whether river boats should have been used to make the most of the ideal conditions even though it was the turn for coastal boats this year. Next year we could be rowing river boats in sinking conditions.... As well as the 6 championship races there was a full regatta program including a Junior Regatta - no tide so it would be a long day with the 1st race at 10.00am and the last at ten past 6. On Saturday 8th July, rowers from Herne Bay AR represented the Coast Amateur Rowing Association (Kent & Sussex) at the South Coast Championships. This year the event was held at the future Olympic regatta centre at Dorney Lake, Eton. The conditions were good, if a little chilly for the many spectators who travelled from Herne Bay to support their crews. The day started with sculling events for the under 16s, in which crews rowed a 1000 metre course. The under 16 crew of Carlo Monticolombi, William Campbell, Michael Epps and Nicholas Cox, coxed by George Holness, came third in the coastal boat event, but didn’t have such luck in the river boat event. It then was up to the girls under 14 crew of April Towner, Amanda Waters, Phobe Shilling and Samantha Epps, coxed by George Holness, to show the other associations what Herne Bay can do. They won over Poole by approximately 200 metres. Their coach Andy Turner from Kings School will be very pleased with that result after all the time he put in over the weeks leading up to the regatta. The girls were privileged to be the first crew to race in the club’s newest boat the ‘Dave Evans’. Mr Evans, a long-standing member of the club, was very honoured to have a boat named after him and was very there to see their victory. Herne Bay’s veteran crew of Trevor Brown, Mark Davies, Stuart Webb and Harry Roberts (Captain), coxed by George Holness, represented CARA in the Veteran Championship race but were disappointed to come 5th on the day. In the Men’s Senior Championship event, aka ‘The Bowl’, Herne Bay had high hopes for Dan Richie, Ashley Epps, Mark Simmonds and Ryan Hosking, coxed by Samantha Epps. In an exciting race the Herne Bay crew did all they could to win the coveted prize, but were beaten by four other crews. There was a small cheer, however, when Herne Bay lad Lewis Iddenden crossed the line in second place in the BCT crew. Ryde won the race. In the open events only the men’s senior crew of Darren Ingram, Andy Cooper, Matt Appleby and Trevor Iddenden, qualified for the final. In a very close race the crew was with the leaders until the halfway point but were eventually pipped to fifth place. Although the event was well supported by the junior and novice rowers from club, none of them were able to qualify. Dinner and Dance The end of season Dinner Dance was held in the Ballroom at the Marine Hotel, Tankerton. After dinner there were well received speeches from this year's CARA president Jeremy Holmes and HBARC captain Harry Roberts followed by the awarding of the annual club prizes by Ryan Epps HBARC Chairman as follows: The Daisy Attwood Trophy for most Junior points- Ian Baker and Jamie Ross-Cummings The Henry Shepherd Trophy for the most points for the club - Ryan Hoskins and Jamie Ross-Cummings. The Ken Standon Trophy for the most improved oarsman - Will Mihr. The Ormistone Memorial trophy for most improved lady rower- Amanda Waters. The Trevor Horton Trophy for Coxswain of the year - jointly won for the 2nd year by Samantha Epps and George Holness. The Macket Cup presented for contribution to the club - Mark Davies.
2006 Season The Viking Shield The day started unpromisingly, cold and overcast with a brisk onshore breeze stirring up the water. Visiting clubs were reluctant to unload their trailers fearing challenging conditions and an imminent cancellation. However, local knowledge suggested things would get better, as indeed they did, the wind dropped to nothing and the sun came out and, unlike last year, the Regatta went ahead. Racing took place on calm seas and in bright sunshine. In the main event, the Senior pairs race for the Viking Shield, Bexhill in the outermost lane and furthest from the shore won for the second year running beating Herne Bay A, who were rowing along the beach, closest to the spectators who could not separate the two crews. The official verdict was 6 inches. However, as Bexhill is in Sussex the top Kent crew, Ryan and Darren, retain the Viking Shield. A trophy they have now held for nearly a decade. in third place were Andy Cooper and Ashley, who look like they may be pushing Ryan and Darren later this season in this event. Darren W. and Kevin were a few places behind. The senior four of Darren I, Ashley, Mark and Ryan coxed by Adele won convincingly, despite having what they considered to be a shaky start. The B crew Andy Cooper Stewart, Kevin and Darren W coxed by Rhys came fourth after Bexhill and Folkestone. In Senior Sculls Ryan came second and in Junior sculls Andy Cooper came second to the Folkestone sculler (who is thereby awarded the Butch Thomsett Trophy). The Women's Senior Four, Helen, Emily, Helen and Nat coxed by Rhys, in their first race as Seniors (having risen from the Junior event last year) came third. Ladies pair Natalie and Helen Bell came second to DealIn the JS race, Harry, Paul, Mark D and Trevor, coxed by George (who did very well in his 1st race) came 3rd. The same crew coxed by Rhys in their own event, Junior 4s also came 3rdJunior pairs were not held much to Harry's disgust, who spent most of the day trying to persuade people to enter and for all his effort considers himself the de facto winner of the event. Rowing concluded shortly after 3.00pm with the presentations not long after. Celebrations continued into the evening with a disco in the Boathouse Medway Head On a sunny but cold day, a small Herne Bay contingent took part in the Medway Head regatta. The Ladies Senior 4 (Natalie, Issie, Emily and Helen Bannister) beat crews from Folkestone and Dover to win their first senior race. Despite losing time by clashing blades with another crew, they beat the second place crew by almost half a minute. Ryan took away first prize in both the Mens Senior Coastal Sculls and the Open Coastal Sculls. Ashley and Andy both had good races in Novice and Junior Sculls respectively and raced together in Men's Senior Pairs. Bexhill Herne Bay returned to the scene of their triumph in last year's South coast Championships for another good day of racing The junior races were dominated by Herne Bay and we won the aggregate points trophy for this category. The Junior 4 of Harry, Paul, Dan and Trevor coxed by Samantha Epps stormed to victory and Paul and Dan repeated this success in the pairs race - at their first attempt! The Novice 4 Ian, Michael, Paul and Dan coxed by Natalie also won. The ladies senior 4 crossed the line second but were disqualified. In Junior sculls Andy cooper was second, the same position as Ryan in the senior event. In the main event, the Senior Fours Herne Bay A Darren Ryan Mark S and Ashley coxed by Adele came second but were pushed hard by Herne Bay B Stewart, Dan, Andy cooper and Trevor Id coxed by Sam - could be an interesting in future races! Darren and Ryan won the senior Pairs and in the Ladies pairs Natalie and Helen came second Worthing The Regatta started at the later than usual time of 1.00pm which was alright for those who wanted a lie in but not for some who were concerned about watching a certain football match later in the afternoon.... On another hot sunny day, perfect for spectators on the beach, the Junior Four had another good race and won easliy. This time the crew were Harry, Dan, Mark D and Trevor coxed by George. This is the 3rd combination for this crew as well as the 3rd win. Paul, who sat out this time was compensated by a win in the Junior Pairs race with Dan. Trevor and Harry came second and Mark D with Micahael Epps trailed in fourth. In the days main race - the Senior Fours - Bexhill again won but 2nd and 3rd places were taken by Herne Bay and this time the 'A' crew Ryan, Mark S, Ashley and Darren coxed by Adele beat the 'B' crew of Andy Cooper, Dan, Stuart and Trevor Id coxed by Nathan but there was not much in it. The Ladies' Senior Four of Helen, Helen, Issy and Natalie coxed by Sam Epps came 3rd while the Ladies Novice crew of Frances Pullen, Katie Shaw, Megan Jordan and Rosie Hobbs coxed by Natalie came 4th in their first race of the season. The Ladies' Pair of Helen B and Natalie came second in their race. The Senior pairs race ended with the same result as senior Fours, a win for Bexhill but second and third places to Herne Bay. This Time Ashley and Andy got the better of Ryan and Darren. In the JS4 Harry, Paul, Mark D and Trevor coxed by George came Fourth. With racing finished, prizes were given out on the sea front at about 6.00pm while England were throwing away their World Cup chances on TV in the bar. Southsea Sunny Southsea, where cara crews meet their Hants and Dorset rivals. All the extra crews mean more heats and a long days racing...or at least sitting around waiting for a race..! 10.00am start and the last race finished after 7.00pm. Many events have separate heats for cara and Hand D to ensure an even mix in the final and a hint of what to expect at the south coast champs in Dartmouth later this year, as long as all clubs enter their fastest crews in each category and crews don't get disqualified - which isn’t always the case. The sun disappeared and the wind increased by early afternoon leading to ominously lumpy conditions but then the sun came out again in time for most of the finals. In the days 1st final HB's Ladies N4 gained more race experience in their second competitive race, they had the same crew as last week of Frances Pullen, Katie Shaw, Megan Jordan and Rosie Hobbs coxed by Will Campbell. The mens Novice 4 of Tim Carnell-McKean, Chris O'Brien,Will Campbell and Ian Baker coxed by Sam Epps did not progress beyond their heat but got a second go in the Junior race later in the day. Andy cooper and Trev Iddenden both qualified for the Junior sculls in the cara heat immediately before jumping into the Senior Four B crew with Stuart Webb and Dan to qualify for the final in that event as well. HB’s senior 4 A crew were one place ahead of them winning the heat and now with their bowl crew back together with Richard Twyman re-joining Ryan Hosking, Mark Symons and Darren Ingram with Adele coxing hoping to retain the Pompey Grand (the Portsmouth Grand Challenge Trophy). However – controversy struck in the final of the S4s which was also the last race of the day. HB A were drawn in lane 1 and turned first but hit a crew coming the other way. They were then disqualified from the rerow and had to watch our B crew come second to a BTC crew that contained Herne Bay’s Lewis Iddenden from last years JS crew. I must admit to not having seen the incident so can't comment..... In Senior Pairs Ryan and Darren won earlier in the day with Andy and Ashley a very close third. Today's J4 combo came second to Itchen and were Harry Roberts, Dan Ritchie, Paul Kelly and Trevor Brown coxed by George Holness. In JS 4 the same crew but with Mark D instead of Dan were disqualified after coming ashore before a rerow after the race was stopped at the turns. In Junior pairs Paul and Mark trailed far behind Trevor and Harry who came second. Folkestone Following last weeks cancellation at Eastbourne everyone was raring to go in the latest round in the CARA league took place in Folkestone, or more accurately Sandgate a few miles down the coast where the Folkestone club relocated some years ago. The day started grey drizzly and humid in HB but on arrival in Sandgate it was again bright and sunny, temperatures in the region of 30 degrees. The day ended with wins for Herne Bay in Senior Fours, Senior Pairs, Ladies Senior fours, Junior Fours and Junior Pairs First success of the day for HB came when Daniel Richie and Mark Davies won J pairs with Harry and Trevor 3rd. a few races later Dan was again in action with Ashley, Stewart, and Andy Cooper as the Senior 4 "B" crew came 3rd. The A crew of Ryan Richard Mark S and Darren coxed by Adele got their second win of the season beating Bexhill by a canvas. This may partly make up for the disappointment of Southsea where they were disqualified after a collision despite comfortably leading the race Ryan and Darren in the senior pairs race beat a large field to win easily. Andy and Ashley were 3rd just behind Bexhill. Ladies pair Natalie and Helen Bell got off to a great start and finished 3rd Ladies senior 4 of Natalie Emily Helen and Helen coxed by Sam celebrated Emily's return to the crew by storming to victory in another exciting race. This is the ladies' first senior win of the season after coming up from the junior division last year. The Junior 4 crew qualified for the south coast championships today by becoming cara Junior 4 champions with the 5th win of the season. Today the crew was Harry, Dan, Mark D and Trevor coxed by George Holness Paul Kelly has also been involved in 2 of the previous wins for this combination of rowers. This tally giives them an unbeatable lead in the league with only 4 regattas to go. Andy cooper qualified for J sculls with a second place in the heat a result he repeated in the final The mens Novice 4 of Tim, Chris, Jeremy and Will coxed by Natalie raced at the start of the day and again in The junior 4 race at the end of the day when Michael epps stood in for Jeremy. Shoreham This was the first regatta of the season and things started promisingly with good conditions for racing. However as the day wore on conditions deteriorated to the extent that the Regatta was abandoned halfway through. The last race to be held, after lengthy debate, was senior Fours (this should have been event 18 out of 21 but was held instead of event 11) - Herne Bay decided not to take part and risk our best boat so missed out on the points but the swamping of three of the five boats that did compete seemed to back up their decision. The results of all the races that were actually held will stand - so points for all top 6 places. Of those, the highlight was Helen B and Natalie's win in the Ladies Pairs. Ryan qualified for the Senior sculls final but the race was called off with some scullers already at the start and the Senior Fours race held instead. A scratch Novice Four came third out of five and the JS Four came fourth out of five. I think the only other HB involvement was Darren in the Junior sculls final but he didn't finish in the points all racing concluded we packed up and went home. Deal Deal Regatta Saturday 29th July 2006 The day was sunny but cooled by a strongish breeze which made for some choppy racing conditions. Deal regatta is unique in that it has 2 turns the first after approx 700 metres and the second with the final 300 metres to go, so the start and finish line is still the same (as at all cara regattas). This makes it a very good Regatta for spectators and as usual Herne Bay were well supported The day started well with the 1st victory of the day going to Mark D and Dan in Junior pairs with Harry and Trevor 2nd. The Ladies Novice 4 Claire Stevens, Megan Jordan, Frances Pullen and Rosie Hobbs coxed by Adele came 3rd Ryan and Richard qualified for the senior sculls and soon after, in the senior pairs final, Ryan and Darren again came first with Ashley Epps and Andy Cooper in 3rd just behind Bexhill. Stewart Webb and new boy Matt started the race but did not finish. Ladies pair Helen Bell and Natalie Ingram crossed the line 3rd in their final. The, already cara champions, Junior 4 crew (Harry, Dan, Mark D and Trevor coxed by George) crossed the line 1st in their final but were disqualified for not taking the 1st turn. This was starting to be a problem with a strong wind and current pushing crews over the buoys half way round. The Ladies senior 4 crew of Helen, Helen Issy and Natalie battled the elements to come a close second to the home crew. In Senior 4s the A and B crew came a very surprising 5th and 6th after more confusion on the 1st turn. Deal started the race a length ahead and eventually won, but our 'A' crew were leading by a length before the first turn but had to retake it. Will, Jeremy, Ian and Chris coxed by Nat came 3rd in Novices beating 2 other crews. They were originally 4th but the winners, Eastbourne, were disqualified whan it was realised that they had earlier come 2nd to Herne Bay's disqualified Junior crew and so were no longer Novices. In Senior sculls Richard was narrowly leading into the turns with Ryan in 4th when he tangled with the following pair of scullers and the race was stopped. In the rerow Richard crossed the line 2nd with Ryan 4th Dover Dover Regatta takes place within the harbour itself so conditions are generally flat but challenges are presented by the occasional cross channel ferry wash and hazards which include swimmmers and boats either moored or zigzagging across the harbour. Due to start at 10.00am but delayed by half an hour while the turns were sorted out. The promised flat conditions were whipped up by a strong breeze which made things slightly choppy as the day went on. Herne Bays results (in race order) were as follows. Race 3. Ladies Novice Fours - Rosie Hobbs, Megan Jordan, Katie Shaw, Frances Pullen coxed by Samantha Epps Continue to improve, today they came second behind Bexhill Race 4. Senior Pairs - Ashley Eps, Andy Cooper came 3rd behind Ryan Hosking, Darren Ingram who were 2nd today behind the Mitchels of Bexhill Race 9. Ladies Pairs - Natalie Ingram, Helen Bell came a close 2nd Race 11. Junior Pairs - Harry Roberts, Trevor Brown came 2nd behind Mark Davies, Dan Richie who took 1st place. With Paul Kelly and Ian Baker coming 6th Race 12. Ladies Junior Fours - Rosie Hobbs, Megan Jordan, Katie Shaw, Frances Pullen coxed by Samantha Epps came 5th Race 14. Ladies Senior Fours - Natalie Ingram, Issy Nash, Helen Bell, Helen Bannister coxed by sam Epps came 2nd to the home crew repeating last weeks position Race 15 J16 Double sculls - Megan Jordan and Will Campbell entered their first race in this event Race 16. Senior Sculls - R Twyman won Race 17. Junior Senior Fours - Harry Roberts Dan Richie Mark Davies Trevor Brown cox George Holness came second in a well paced race, alarming the 3 Bexhill crews who normally have this event to themselves. Herne Bay won the Dai Ellis memorial trophy in this race, despite not winning, as the 1st Kent crew to cross the line. The 'B' crew Ian Baker, Paul Kelly, Matt and Michael Epps came fourth. Race 18. Ladies Double Sculls - Emily Heath, Issy Nash continue Race 19. Junior Fours - Harry Roberts, Dan Richie, Mark Davies, Trevor Brown cox G Holness, who are already the CARA champions in this event this year, came a very close second 2nd after losing a lot of time on the start tangled up with another crew who started too close - unseen by the starter. The 'B' crew Ian Baker, Paul Kelly, Chris O'Brien, Michael Epps came a few places behind. Race 21. Senior Fours - our A crew Ryan Hosking, Mark Simmonds, Richard Twyman, Darren Ingram coxed by Adele stayed out of trouble and seem to be back to their winning ways at last coming a very convincing 1st. Our B crew of Ashley Epps, Stewart Webb, Dan Richie, Andy Cooper were snagged on the turns again and finished 6th The prizes were awarded by the familiar figure of CARA president Paul Monroe who was no doubt pleased to hand over to Herne Bay the trophies for Grand Aggregate, Senior Aggregate and Junior Aggregate points. Dartmouth Championships The Herne Bay Crews and events for today were: Championship Men's Senior coxed fours for the Bideford Bowl Ryan Hosking, Richard Twyman, Mark Simmonds, Darren Ingram, Adele Taylor (cox) Championship Ladies Senior coxed fours for the Anglia Building Society Cup Helen Bannister, Helen Bell, Issy Nash, Natalie Ingram, Sam Epps (cox) Championship Men's Junior coxed fours for the Dudley Ward Challenge Cup Trevor Brown, Dan Ritchie, Mark Davies, 'Harry' Roberts, George Holness (cox) Open Men's Senior coxed fours Matt Appleby, Andy Cooper, Ashley Epps, Trevor Iddenden, Vanessa (cox) The Championship races are between 6 crews, 2 qualifying from each of the south coast rowing associations (CARA, Hants and Dorset, West of England ARA) The first Herne Bay crew to compete today were the Senior IV A crew in Event 15 at 1.34pm. This was the day's main event, the championship Mens Senior coxed fours, an event the same HB crew won last year at Bexhill. Their opponents included HBs Lewis Iddenden rowing for BTC in the crew that deprived HB from retaining the Pompey Grand at Southsea this year. They failed to reproduce last year's form in an exciting close fought race but the bowl remains with a cara crew with Bexhill taking 1st place. Next race for HB was at 3.34pm Event 25 Championship Men's Junior coxed fours. HB qualified as CARA champions in this event and 3 of this years crew came a close second in the invitation 4s race at the S. coast champs in Bexill last year. Before the race the question was whether this seasond addition of Dan to the crew would make enough of an impact to continue the run of wins they've had this season. After a long row round the outside of the bend they finished the race in 3rd place (dead heating with 2 other crews including Estbourne – the other CARA qualifying crew) 16 minute later in Event 26 the Senior B crew were in heat 1 of the Open Men's senior coxed fours, 3 of this four won the championship JS race last year with Mat instead of Lewis (with BTC this year) they easily qualified for the final at 6.00pm, at 5.34 p.m. Event.35 was the Championship Ladies Senior coxed fours The HB ladies were the first CARA crew to cross the line but could not catch the leading crew. They were not helped in this by being washed down by what looked like a photographers launch – obviously trying to give a bit of a coastal feel to the event. In the last race of the day the Senior Bs were back on the water but could not finish the final as convincingly as the heat With racing over and the boats back on the trailer (or before for some) we adjourned to the local hostelries for drowning of sorrows into the small hours
2005 Season Medway Head The first competitive event of the year for Herne Bay took place on the River Medway in Maidstone on a sunny 3rd day of April 2005. Herne Bay only had 2 fours and 2 pairs entered in this pre-season warm up event. Entries were quite low in this re-scheduled fixture but there were a fair number of coastal clubs represented. We'll have to wait for Viking Shield in a month's time for a more accurate test of who crews to beat will be this season, but well done to Bexhill anyway for coming first overall in a time of 10:05 With limited space on river and a time trial format racing was split into 3 divisions. In first at 10 O'clock our new boat 'Dave and Debby' had it's first taste of competition. Seniors Ryan Hosking and Darren Ingram were joined by Andy Cooper and Ashley Epps from Junior Senior crew and coxed by William Campbell. They finished 9th in a time of 10:48 and were 3rd Coastal Senior Four, but it is still a mystery who will be rowing with Ryan and Darren in their Senior Four this summer, numerous permutations having already been proposed. Later at 11 O'clock eternally optimistic elderly juniors (Harry Roberts, Andy Harris, Mark Davies and Trevor Brown also coxed by William Campbell) took to water recording lowest Herne Bay time of 11:29 in 28th place but, more importantly, - they were FASTEST Coastal Junior Four. Further success was achieved in this division by pairings of Seniors Ryan/Darren and Junior Seniors Andy/Ashley. Despite borrowing a Kings School River Pair, Andy and Ashley were beaten by Ryan and Darren by 1 second, they were however fastest Senior 3 pair in a time of 11:12 and Ryan and Darren were fastest pair in event and won Coastal Pair category rowing in 'Johnny Heil'. Herne Bay The racing conditions at Herne Bay can sometimes be challenging, especially when the wind is northerly as it was today. However in the end only the novice sculls and doubles races were cancelled due to the conditions. The Junior Ladies were again victorious with Helen Bannister instead of an injured Hannah Rourke joining Helen Bell, Emily Heath and Natalie Ingram. This win means they are now CARA champions for 2005. Ryan Hosking also sealed his position as CARA Junior sculls champion with his win today. Congratulations to all of them. The JS 4 who had already booked their place at he South Coast Championships continued their unbeaten run. The Senior Four (Ryan Hosking, Darren Ingram, Mark Symons and Richard Twyman)also won again and still lead the points needing only a few more to also be confirmed as league champions The Viking Shield race (delayed from earlier in the year) was contested and retained by Darren and Ryan even though they came second in the Senior Pairs race. This is because the winners, Bexhill (who now have an unbeatable lead in the CARA league), are not from Kent and the Viking Shield is contested between the Kent clubs who showed hospitality to 2 Scandinavians in the 1920s after they had rowed across the North Sea on a visit to our shores. In the Junior Pairs Harry and Trevor beat Mark and Andy for the first time. Then the Junior 4 of Harry, Andy, Dan and Trevor had their best row of the season narrowly missing out on 2nd place. As it was the Home Regatta as many crews as possible were entered including some Coastal novices from Ali's adaptive river crew. Alan joined Stewart Webb and Marks Ormiston and Davies in the veteran Four who started well but finished fifth. He also rowed in Novice and Junior Fours and resolve to tell his river rowing friends how tough it is on the coast Folkestone Things had warmed up by 2.00pm for the Senior 4 final when Herne Bay 'A' (Ryan Hosking, Darren Ingram, Mark Symons and Richard Twyman coxed by Will Campbell) were again narrowly denied 1st place by Bexhill, even with the new blades - freshly painted and gleaming in the sunshine that waited until this race to come out. Earlier in the the day, in the Junior Senior 4 final there was another convincing victory for the Herne Bay A crew (Andy Cooper, Ashley Epps, Lewis Iddenden, and Trevor Iddenden coxed by Will Campbell). This makes it 2 wins out of 2 for the winners of the Open Junior event at last years South Coast Championships. The same crew also acquitted themselves well in the Senior 4s race coxed by Rhys. More success for Herne Bay in the Final of Junior Ladies 4s. The A crew (Helen Bell, Hannah Rourke, Emily Heath and Natalie Ingram) did one better than at Worthing, this time coming First. After a shaky start they led into the turns, had a bit of a wobble just after but were so far ahead by then not to lose their position. This crew had also raced in the Senior ladies race which must have provided a good warm up. The B crew (Helen Bannister and 3 others in their first days racing) also raced for the first time in this event. In the Junior 4 final the field was split with a leading pack and a trailing pack. Somewhere in the gap between the two were Herne Bay A (Harry Roberts, Paul Kelly, Mark Davies and Andy Harris). In the Veteran 4 the 3 Marks (Symonds, Davies & Ormiston) together with Harry made up the latest permutation and came in 5th for their efforts. A comfortable row by all accounts with plenty of room for improvement considering it was a first for this combination. In the Novice 4 s race both the men's crew (John Atkinson, Michael Epps, Paul Kelly and Dan) and the ladies A crew (Helen Bell, Hannah Rourke, Emily Heath and Natalie Ingram) qualified for the final. Turning to the Pairs events, in Senior pairs there were 3 HB crews. Guy Addington and Mark Ormiston (2 races in one day for Mark after a gap of half a decade!) did not make the final but the other two did. Ryan and Darren continued their good form coming second by the closest of margins, Andy and Ashley were also in the final. In Junior pairs the HB crews came came 5th and 6th Mark and Andy managed to beat Harry and Dan in the latter pairs first race together and for Dan nearly his first race ever. Finally, a double success in the the individual events. Senior Sculls were won for Herne Bay by Richard Twyman and Junior Sculls Won by Ryan, Ashley also started the final but did not finish. Another good days racing sees Herne Bay continue their season in strong form. The senior aggregate points total was drawn with Bexhill - the winner was decided by the toss of a coin - unfortunately not in our favour. Overall aggregate points total left us two points adrift of Bexhill so we are now second by 3 points.
Dover The ancient port of Dover was the venue for the pre penultimate Regatta of the season. Not a great day for Herne Bay's JS CARA champions who, despite crossing the line first, were disqualified due to some mishap at the turns. This means that Dover, who came second, will also become a senior crew next season when it was looking like the HB crew would be the only new senior crew next season. It also meant that our 'B' crew gained 3rd place, the best result this season for the Junior Crew. In other events the Senior Four, Ladies Junior Four and Novice Four all crossed the line first without being disqualified, as did Ryan in the Junior Sculls. For the Novice Four, however, it was a non qualifying event as there were only 5 entries - this means they have to win again to lose their novice status. Southsea Southsea attracts entries from the Hants and Dorset Association as well as CARA (Kent and Sussex) and is a good indicator of form ahead of the South Coast Championships later this year. As always it was bright and sunny and unlike last year, when racing was cut short, the sea remained flat so all races were finished in good time. The extra racing was obviously good practice for the Senior Four (Ryan Hosking, Darren Ingram, Mark Symons and Richard Twyman coxed by Will Campbell) as they ended the day by taking top place and one of the most impressive trophies in coastal rowing. They had earlier indicated their intentions by winning their heat against all the other CARA crews. Further Fours success for the Junior Senior Four (Andy Cooper, Ashley Epps, Lewis Iddenden, and Trevor Iddenden coxed by Will Campbell) who also won their final so they remain unbeaten this season The senior crew were taking their fours race seriously so no Senior Pairs entry for Ryan and Darren but Andy and Ashley from the JS four did represent HB coming third. From the senior four Richard Twyman entered the Senior sculls and Ryan the Junior sculls both coming second to Hants and Dorset scullers but unbeaten by CARA opponents. The ladies Junior Four (Helen Bell, Helen Bannister, Emily Heath and Natalie Ingram) came second to Coalporters so were the fastest CARA crew in their event. The 2 Helens also entered Junior Pairs finishing well in their First Pairs race. The latest combination for Vet Four (Harry Roberts, Mark Davies, Stewart Webb and Mark Ormiston) came 5th, after a good start they faded badly .a similar story for Herne Bay A in Junior Fours (Harry Roberts, Andy Harris, Mark Davies and Trevor Brown) who finished 5th in their heat failing to make the final. The novice Four (John Atkinson, Michael Epps, Paul Kelly) finished 5th in their final, but were the fastest CARA crew. Early in the day the Southsea commentator, remarking on the current dominance of CARA senior crews over Hants and Dorset crews, said it was due to CARA clubs adopting ARA training methods. I don't know how true that is but our crews that did well today have certainly trained hard for their success, while those of us who nearly did well may need to work harder to achieve the same level of success. Shoreham Our Senior A crew gave this one a miss due to unavailability but they had already qualified for the South coast championships. In their absence the HB JS crew came a very good 3rd and Deal beat Bexhill to 1st place meaning that our Senior crew stay in the lead on points in the CARA championship. The JS crew also won their own event ending the season unbeaten, save for 1 disqualification. The Junior crew came 5th in the JS race and 4th in their own event. The Ladies Junior crew won again, but the Novice crew narrowly failed to repeat yesterdays success coming 2nd (with Will rowing instead of Mark D) In the individual events events Ryan again won J sculls confirming his position at the top of the championship points and Richard came 2nd in senior sculls In Junior pairs Trevor and Harry battled the elements to 3rd place with Andy and Dan a couple of places behind. In Senior pairs in Ryan and Darren's absence Andy and Ashley came 4th Finally, there was no veteran 4 crew, we must have just run out of combinations. Perhaps next season there'll be a settled crew in training for this event as there are certainly enough eligible oarsmen as the many permutations this season have shown. Brighton Originally due to be the First Regatta of the season, predictions of strong south easterly winds caused the original date at the start of June to be cancelled ......following further rescheduling it ended up being held 2 months later on the final Regatta weekend of the season. Today sea conditions were flat but there was a strong offshore breeze, nothing to prevent the Regatta taking place, which is good news after so many cancellations and no event last year. Brighton and Hove Regatta is actually held at the Hove end of the shoreline, far from the central location originally occupied by the now defunct Brighton Rowing Club. First Race of the day was the Novice 4 final and it was soon apparent that the starter sought a level of perfection in the line up that Aristotle would have deemed indicative of an imprecise mind. Anyway, by the time the crews were started they had been blown so far offshore that after1000 metres there was no sign of any turns for the leading crews. The coxes turned sharply inshore to find the turns and the race was abandoned by the umpire with most of the crews heading directly for the shore and the now visible line of turning buoys in front of them. On the restart Herne Bay again led from early on, found a turn this time and increasing their lead on the way home were victorious. Well done to Michael Epps, Dan, Mark Davies, Paul Kelly and Cox Natalie Ingram for their first qualifying win. When the boat finally came ashore Harry and Trevor immediately joined Mark and Dan for the J 4 final which was the next race. Less success in this race however. By the time of the Senior Four Race the starter was still seeking the perfect line and this time went as far as to warn every crew in the race for going over the line at the same time. No one had seen this before, indeed some observers were puzzled because that's what should happen at the start of a race. Anyway, in the race itself Herne Bay A, Ryan, Darren, and Richard Twyman with a replacement for Mark Symonds came second to Bexhill but are still in the lead on points with one race to go. In Senior Sculls Richard was second to a certain Mitchell of Bexhill but Ryan again won in Junior Sculls. Our JS crew (Andy, Ashley, Lewis and Trevor) were back in winning form crossing the line first without being disqualified this time as were the Ladies Junior crew (Helen, Hannah, Natalie and Emily). In Junior Pairs Mark D and Dan came 3rd with Harry and Trevor a couple of places behind. With the combination of all these good results the aggregate points trophy was also won by Herne Bay. Worthing With two Regattas already cancelled this year it was third time lucky for a belated start to the 2005 season and a chance to see who the crews to beat are going to be in the weeks ahead. To eveyone's relief the weather and sea conditions were good and the only problem was a retreating tide late in the afternoon following the delayed start. Our first victory came early on to last years succesful Junior Crew (Andy Cooper, Ashley Epps,Lewis Iddenden, and Trevor Iddenden) who were impressive in the Junior Senor Fours winning by a good distance. The same crew (steered by new cox Rees Cassidy) also came fifth in the Senior Fours Final where Herne Bay A (Ryan Hosking, Darren Ingram, Mark Symons and Richard Twyman) came a very close second to Bexhill in the new boat (it's first win can't be far away - perhaps some new blades may help.....) Also finishing Second in their event were the Womens Junior Four (coxed by Madelaine they are Helen Bell, Hannah Rourke, Emily Heath and Natalie Ingram). The mens Junior Four who failed to go up last year(Harry Roberts, Andy Harris, Mark Davies and Trevor Brown) finished 4th in their race and the novice crew John Atkinson, Michael Epps, Paul Kelly and Mark Davies) qualified but were out of the places in the final. The veteran 4 came 5th and the JS 'B' crew came 4th (both crews being variations on the Junor crew) In pairs racing Ryan and Darren won the senior event with Andy and Ashley 5th. Our Junior pairs (Andy and Mark, Trevor and Harry from the junior 4) finished 5th and 6th. More sucess for HB came in the sculling events with Richard Twyman winning the senior and Ryan winning the Junior events All in all a great start to the season which left Herne Bay second highest in the aggregate points total just one point behind Bexhill.
Eastbourne The day started badly due to persons unknown appropriating the best pair boat from the trailer, parked overnight on Southsea sea front. Luckily it was found, not too badly damaged, washed up against the submarine blocks at Southsea. However upon reaching Eastbourne it was discovered that 2 blades (1 macon 1 cleaver) were also missing. Hopefully those responsible didn't enjoy their swim - the riggers were not attached. As for the racing, the Senior Four (Ryan Hosking, Darren Ingram, Mark Symons and Richard Twyman), Junior Senior Four (Andy Cooper, Ashley Epps, Lewis Iddenden, and Trevor Iddenden) and Ladies Junior Four (Helen Bell, Helen Bannister, Emily Heath and Natalie Ingram - congrats to Helen B by the way for her first trophy) continued their winning ways by beating everyone else. These three crews now top their respective South Coast Championship points categories and look certain to be in contention at Bexhill on the 3rd September. Ryan again won Junior Sculls, but in Senior sculls Richard failed to continue his winning ways. As for the other crews there were some scratch combinations due to absences...... More details to follow when I find them out! Hastings The senior crew (Ryan Hosking, Darren Ingram, Richard Twymen and Mark Symons) who have won the last 2 regattas and Junior Senior crew (Andy Cooper, Ashley Epps, Trevor Iddenden and Lewis Iddenden) as yet unbeaten have high hopes. As do the Ladies Junior IV(Hannah Rourke, Natalie Ingram and Helen Bell coxed) currently leading on points. All these crews are being coxed by Rhys who is having a busy First season. Richard in Senior Sculls and Ryan in Junior Sculls are also highly tipped The day started dull and overcast but with no wind so the temperature was mild - ideal for rowing if a little choppy on the water at times. Also we were without Captain or Vice so in their absence Harry was In Charge (of all crew changes etc...) some may say the power went to his head but I think he did a fantastic job! Originally all races were scheduled as finals but late entries on the day meant heats for most events starting with the Junior IV (captain Harry Roberts, Andy Harris, Mark Davies and Trevor Brown), first Herne Bay crew on the water today and through to the final Senior Pairs also had heats both A (Ryan and Darren) and B (Andy and Ashley) crews getting to the final. Next event was the Ladies Junior IV final and the First victory of the day. This continues their run of success, even though they again had a new crew member. Senior IV heats were next and both A and B crews qualified. In Junior Sculls Ryan didn't make the final after some swimming practice at the turn, but after getting back in he wasn't last in his heat. Trevor Iddenden also tried his luck at Junior sculls for the firsts time. In Junior Pairs both A and B through to the final where Mark D and Andy H came fourth (I think) and Harry and Trevor a bit behind. In the Ladies Senior IV the Herne Bay crew gained more experience of what they'll face when they move up a status next year and in Veteran IV another combo of Harry, Trevor Mark Ormiston and Stewart Webb finished a place better than last time in Fourth. Senior Sculls final saw another win for Richard, and also a less glorious appearance for Mark Ormiston after some years absence from the event. The Final of Junior Senior IV saw Herne Bay A again victorious while the B crew (Junior crew getting some practice) came third. In the Senior Sculls Ryan and Darren unusually finished fourth one place behind Andy and Ashley, maybe saving something for the Senior Four final. The closest race of the day was the long awaited Senior Four Final, Herne Bay this time finished second to Bexhill by the narrowest of margins. This makes it 3:2 in Bexhill's favour so far this season. Off to Bexhill tomorrow for a rematch if the weather holds out - talk of storms was especially alarming to those spending the night under canvas. Bexhill Championships The South Coast Championships took place this year at a bright and breezy Bexhill. This meant conditions were a little choppy for the rowers but perfect for the many spectators on the beach. Unlike a normal CARA Regattas there were no turns today. The course was a straight 1800 metres. For those not familiar with this event, the championship races at each status level are between the top two fours from each of the 3 rowing associations along the south coast of England. (CARA, Hants and Dorset and the West of England) There are also open and invitation races at the Regatta for the many other crews from these associations. The Premier event of the day was the Championship Senior Fours race for the Bideford Bowl. Herne Bay's Senior crew (Ryan Hosking, Richard Twyman, Mark Symonds, Darren Ingram coxed by Adele Taylor) have trained hard for this event all season and today were rewarded with a fine win over BTS with Bexhill third in a nail biting finish. They kept the watching crowds in suspense to the end, as the first two crews approached the line matching each other stroke for stroke. Herne Bay edged out their Hants and Dorset rivals on the line even though an early celebration from the Herne Bay bowman before crossing the line nearly cost the race. The Herne Bay Junior Senior Four (last years winners of the Junior Invitation event at the S.Coast champs - Lewis Iddenden, Trevor Iddenden, Ashley Epps and Andy Cooper coxed by Will Campbell) have dominated their event at every CARA Regatta this season taking some of the pressure off the Senior Four. They took the lead in today's race from early on and built on it to round of a very successful season in strong form. The Ladies Junior Four (Helen Bannister, Natalie Ingram, Emily Heath, Helen Bell coxed by Rhys) fought hard in their championship final, which saw the lead change several times. They finished third but were a little disappointed. Turning to the non-championship races, the men's junior crew (Harry Roberts, Andy Harris, Mark Davies, Trevor Brown coxed by Rhys) had the best result finishing second in the invitation event. They had been closing fast on the leaders, Folkestone, right up to the line nearly pulling off a remarkable victory. Next year it is hoped to have a regular squad of junior rowers training at the club to produce more consistent results at this level. The mens Novice Four (Michael Epps, Dan Ritchie, John Atkinson, Paul Kelly) had high hopes before the race following recent good form. They got through the heat and were contesting the lead in the final before suffering equipment failure with one of the seats which effectively put them out of contention. In the open senior race the recently assembled Captain's four (Stewart Webb and Mark Ormiston joining Guy) got through to the final. There was another success this weekend for Herne Bay Rowing Club - far away in Tokyo at the world rowing championships where Ali's mixed adaptive crew took the Gold medal. Much celebrating followed the good results at the Regatta, both before and after the official prizegiving. We now have two more impressive pieces of silverware to join the rest on display at the Dinner Dance in a few weeks time. No more races this year, the next competitive event will probably be in the new year.....as the nights draw in and the sea gets colder (and lumpier) the focus will shift to land training. Dinner and Dance A fine evening was had by members and guests at the Marine Hotel, Tankerton. After much eating, drinking, toasts and speeches the annual club prizes were awarded by our guest Steve Doswell, CARA President and Roger Plowman, HBARC chairman: The Daisy Attwood Trophy for most Junior and Ladies points jointly won by Helen Bell, Emily Heath and Natalie Ingram. The Henry Shepherd Trophy for the most points for the club Ryan Hoskins The Ken Standon Trophy for the most improved oarsman Michael Epps The Ormistone Memorial trophy for most improved lady rower Natalie Ingram The Trevor Horton Trophy for Coxswain of the year William Campbell The Macket Cup presented for contribution to the club Helen Bannister
2004 Season Deal It was a sunny calm millpond that greeted Herne Bay when they arrived early at Deal for the 10.30 start. In the week leading up to the Regatta certain changes to crews had been made - not in panic but as a considered mid-season adjustment. In the Senior 4 A crew Paul Monroe joined last week's addition, Stuart Webb together with with Ryan Hoskins and Darren Ingram. The Senior Four B crew comprised Guy Addington, Alistair Mckean and the Iddenden brothers from the Junior four. The Junior 4 A crew changed their order Trevor Iddenden now at stroke, brother Lewis at bow and Ashley Epps and Andy Cooper in the middle. The Junior 4 B crew (the oldies) remain unchanged but have lost their Cox William to the younger Junior crew, but have an able replacement in Toby Caira. The women entered 2 races Helen, Liz, Natalie and Hannah with Madeleine coxing in the Junior 4 race and replacing Helen for the Novice 4 race. Racing was delayed while the marker buoys for the turns were sorted out, eventually the first race for Herne Bay was the Junior Fours Final. Our crews were both contesting top spots into the turn, the B crew came out 2nd and were challenging for the lead when the race was called off - apparently the turns weren't straight. In the re-row the young crew ended up 3rd & the oldies were 5th. By this time the Regatta had been severely delayed due to misplaced turns and the course had been shortened (there would normally have been 2 turns but now there was only one) The Junior women's crew got a better start than last week and finished 3rd. In the Novice race, however, they were hampered by problems with the boat and finished behind the other women's Novice crew. In the Junior pairs race Andy and Ashley came 2nd with the other crews in 4th 5th & 7th In the veteran Four Mark, Trevor and Harry ('fresh' from the pairs race immediately before) joined Stuart and were relatively pleased with their 4th place. Reward for the fact they'd actually had a training row during the week. The senior 4 race was full of incident, and was re-rowed 3 times, the first 2 races were called off soon after the turn with Herne Bay well placed. Unfortunately in the final race they were disqualified for impeding another crew. In the Junior Senior race the oldies finished 4th but when the 2nd and 3rd crews were disqualified this turned to a second place and the crew's first trophy of the season. Ryan and Guy both failed to qualify for the junior sculls final. In the senior pairs race Ryan & Darren again got 2nd place behind Bexhill, but were challenging them strongly at the finish. Bexhill Another sunny day but more of a breeze hinted that conditions would be a little more challenging than at Deal yesterday. After some early worries it also appeared that the turns were more firmly attached than at Deal so we'd have to row the full race distance today. In the Junior 4s race the youngsters came 3rd & the oldies 5th Both Senior 4s were outside the top three. The veteran four came 5th. Ryan and Darren's senior pair were again 2nd behind Bexhill In the junior pairs race, in challenging conditions, the Herne Bay crews eventually came 3rd 5th 6th 7th. Trevor and Harry had been leading for much of the first thousand metres before finishing 6th and after the turn right up to the final 100 metres both Mark/Andy and Ashley/Andy had been challenging in 2nd place before dropping back to 5th and 3rd respectively. Eastbourne A later start than normal - 1.00pm, but boat loading at Herne Bay was still at the (earlyish) time of 7.30am. On arrival at Eastbourne the beach was hot and sunny and a brisk onshore breeze promised non-flat racing conditions. First crews to race were the Senior Fours. The First crew, unchanged from last week, of Ryan Hosking, Paul Monroe, Stuart Webb, Darren Ingram coxed by Luke Caira qualified comfortably. The second crew were nearly our younger Junior crew (with no Junior Senior Race today this was the only opportunity for extra race practice) but with Alistair McKean in for Andy Cooper, they also qualified earning extra race practice later in the final. However both crews failed to make an impact in the final. Both Ryan and Guy Addington failed to get through the Junior Sculls heat to the Final Next Herne Bay crew was the Ladies Junior Four. This week's combination of Helen Bannister, Hannah Rourke, Natalie Ingram and Helen Bell coxed by Luke were raring to go but within minutes of going afloat had to return to shore with a broken foot stretcher. With only 3 minutes to change boats and Helen B with an injured wrist they scratched from the race. Later in the Novice race the same crew, with a replacement for Helen B finished well halfway through a field comprised of men's and ladies crews. In the hotly contested Junior Fours race the elder crew of Harry Roberts, Andy Harris, Mark Davies and Trevor Brown coxed by Luke Caira found some form in the first 1000 and were holding second place up until the last 500 when they were pressured by the more youthful Herne Bay crew of Lewis Iddenden, Andy Cooper, Ashley Epps and Trevor Iddenden coxed by Michael Epps. So an excellent 2nd and 3rd for Herne Bay with only Bexhill in the way of greater glory. In the Junior Pairs the 8 Junior oarsmen split into their usual pairs - so there were 4 Herne Bay crews in the field of 12. The start was very congested on the inside and Mark and Andy H in lane 2 immediately tangled with another pair which put them out of serious contention. They did pull back some places including the Iddenden brothers who are still finding their feet in their first season of pairs racing. Ashley and Andy managed to weave their way out of the places while, by keeping out of trouble, Harry and Trevor had the best finish position coming 3rd proving that age and experience can triumph over youth. The veteran (minimum age 40) Four keep improving with each race. Harry Roberts, Mark Davies, Stuart Webb and Trevor Brown coxed by Michael Epps had an excellent start to put them in an early lead and after rowing a good race finished third. In the last race of the day for Herne Bay our supporters finally had something to cheer. Ryan Hosking and Darren Ingram had done their homework before the Senior Pairs race to find the best water. Drawn in Lane 3 they made sure that they stuck as close to the shore as possible on the way back (giving the spectators some anxious moments) and in a hard fought race they emerged victorious pushing Bexhill into 2nd place for the first time this season. Folkestone A fair sized Herne Bay contingent together with their supporters arrived to a bright sunny day with light breeze and flat sea, giving no hint that racing would not be completed. Before the end, however we managed to come away with 2 second places and some 3rds and 4ths in the races that were held. The veterans, boosted by their encouraging 3rd at Southsea, (and having had their first ever training outing during the week) were 1st to test the water. Despite the local knowledge of a borrowed cox and a comfortable 1st thousand they faded to finish 4th behind 2 Folkestone crews & Bexhill. In the heats of Junior sculls Ryan qualified in Heat 1 but the captain was unsuccessful in Heat 2. Immediately after his sculls heat Ryan joined Darren for the Senior pairs final in which they finished 2nd behind the Mitchells of Bexhill. The Herne Bay Women's Junior 4 were left on the start (chaotic starts were the order of the day) but fought back to 3rd place. Then came the junior pairs final, a race well supported by Herne Bay with 4 crews. After a muddled start & slow turn Herne Bay C, (Mark & Andy) came 2nd after Dover for their first trophy of the season. Further down the field were the Ids 9th Harry/Trev 7th and Andy/Ashley 6th. Conditions were worsening by the time of the Junior 4s race which was unfortunate as the youngsters had been training on the river all week. There was another terrible start, but after the turn the 2 Herne Bay crews were fighting each other (and the side-on waves) for 3rd place with the youngsters eventually ending up better off and the 'oldies' left in 4th.. Racing was abandoned soon after so there were no Women's Novice 4, Senior 4 or Junior sculls finals for our various crews. All over by halfway through the afternoon and following prize giving for a couple of consolation 2nd place trophies it was back to Herne Bay for the horse racing evening. Waltrop HERNE BAY AMATEUR ROWING CLUB has had a busy couple of weekends with the annual presentation evening at the club house at spa esplanade being swiftly followed by a visit from over 30 of our friends from Waltrop rowing club the following weekend. After arriving on Friday evening, Saturday was spent enjoying the local sights and - for some - getting in some rowing practice in dead calm conditions. Saturday evening saw another big event at the Boathouse with live music and a happy treasurer with most of the Smirnoff Ice being consumed. On Sunday the main event was not the football match (won 4-2 by Herne Bay - see Harry for a full match report and explanation of back Passing) but the naming of our latest boat after Waltrop's late Johnny Heil. Emotional speeches were given by Herne Bay chairman Roger Plowman and Johnny's daughter Denia before the boat was taken out in challenging conditions by Herne Bay's top pair - Ryan and Darren. Unfortunately the conditions were too rough for the planned rowing race between Herne Bay and Waltrop so everyone returned to the bar. That evening saw the second presentation evening in as many weeks with Herne Bay being awarded the football trophy and a ship's bell for the bar from RV Waltrop as a symbol of the friendship between the clubs rounding off a busy and enjoyable weekend. Dover The last regatta of the season proved highly successful for Herne Bay. Firstly the ladies junior four Helen Bell, Hannah Rourke, Helen Bannister, Natalie Ingram with Madeline Hopkinson as the Cox came second to Dover. Junior four of Trevor Iddenden, Ashley Epps, Andy Cooper, Lewis Iddenden with the Cox of William Campbell also came second in their race this crew then split up into pairs for the junior pairs with pair Andy Cooper and Ashley Epps finishing second and pair Trevor and Lewis Iddenden finishing third just behind Bexhill The senior four race also produced a fine result for the bay club with the A crew Darren Ingram, Ryan Hoskins, Alistar Mckean, Guy Addington with a cox of William Campbell finishing second and the young junior crew who also entered for more practise just behind in third place With all these second places the club needed a win from somewhere and it came from one of the clubs most consistent performers. Ryan Hoskins continued his newly formed sculling career with a fine win in the junior sculls also his young prodigy andy Cooper finished third. Another second place came in the senior pairs for Darren Ingram and Ryan Hoskins. Herne Bay's day finished on another high note when they were awarded with the junior aggregate. With the season over on the coast Herne Bay now go to the championships at Bideford in Devon next weekend where although they have no crews in championship events they are entered in a variety of open events. Bideford Championships Herne Bay finished their rowing season with a trip to Bideford in Devon for the South Coast Rowing Championships with 5 crews in 5 open events. First to go afloat were the junior four T.IDDENDEN/A.EPPS/A.COOPER/L.IDDENDEN COX W.CAMPBELL in their heat which they won convincingly. Next out were the senior fours with two crews entered. The B crew A.MCKEAN/G.ADDINGTON/C.DODSWELL/A.VICKERS COX M.HOPKINSON won their heat but could only manage 5th place in the final. The A crew D.INGRAMS/S.WEBB/P.MUNROE/R.HOSKINS COX W.CAMPBELL did not qualify from their heat due to having taken on too much water in conditions that were worsening by the minute. So much so that the Regatta was halted for one hour. On the restart Herne Bay's next race was the junior fours final and the hard work that this four have put in throughout the season finally paid off when they won their race coming in 3 to 4 lengths in front of Itchen Imperial. See picture above of the winning crew. The ladies four H.BELL/E.HEATH/J.CROPPER/H.BANNISTER COX M.EPPS were next out but were hit with problems on the way down to the start and failed to make the start. This caused problems for the junior senior four T.BROWN/T.CAIRA/A.HARRIS.H.ROBERTS COX P.MCRORRY who then had to borrow a boat and cox to make sure they made the start for the last race of the day, which they did, and came a fine second place behind RYDE. Dinner and Dance The presentation evening showed hbarc is in good health with 70 members enjoying a night of presentations, excellent food and live music. The presentations are given to members to the club for their acheivments and contributions to the club over the last year. The year itself was a very difficult year for the rowing club with the poor weather conditions making many clubs postpone the regattas to other dates. The season finally ended at the south coast rowing championships at Bideford in Devon where the junior crew came away good winners in the open event beating crews from the West of England and Hants. and Dorset associations. The presentation of the most improved rower went to one of the members of this winning junior crew, ASHLEY EPPS, Ashley has grown in strength and maturity in the rowing world and with the three other young lads look a great crew for next years junior /senior section. Cox of the year went to WILL CAMPBELL who steered the junior crew to victory at Bideford . Will a pupil of Queen Elizabeth's School and has coxed for many years always proving himself a quality cox , next year he hopes to break it to the rowing side and do a bit of sculling. The best lady oarsman went to HELEN BELL, Helen is one of a really nice group of ladies who have started rowing over the last few years and hats must come off to them , just like the new male rowers, some of the ladies suffered blisters on their hands but kept it going and are proving themselves an excellent asset to the club. They are all eager to become a winning side of the club and are training to be ready for next year ANDY COOPER came away with two awards, most points won for the club and the most junior points won for the club , winning the latter by one point over Ashley Epps who was Andy's rowing partner in all categories except one sculling race. The club survives on the good will and generosity of its new and old members and this year the award for the club member of the year went to HARRY ROBERTS , Harry rowed with HBARC in the seventies went to HERNE BAY football club and is now back rowing at the age of fifty. The club would like to thank Harry and all the hard working members for the help given to keep the club that was founded in 1887 going strong. The rowing club would like to see more people involved in sport and like all other clubs in Herne Bay would like to see you come down to a club , it might not be the sport for you, why not try it out. Herne Bay has plenty of sports clubs , so get involved, enjoy what is on offer. The rowing club offers a healthy , safe club and has a youth protection officer ,pop down to the club on a Sunday lunch time to talk about the rowing club.
